I want to get a set of drum mics (preferrably 7 kit). Because of the price i want the samson 7 kit...but ive heard awful things about the c02 pencil mics here. I know it is too good to be true 7 mics for 315 bucks. Should i just construct my own set, if so what should i get? Preferrably under 400 bucks. Is there any easy answer????
Thanks in advance

Yes I have miked a kit before but I am only about 2 years into recording. Usually when I record my kit(mapex v-series) I use a Sennheisere835 In the kick, on the snare. An MXL v67 on the hihat and an MXL 603 as an overhead. I am recording to a PC with a delta 66 and a delta 1010. I am looking at getting a matched pair of 603s because i often use the one i have for miking a piano. What do you have to say about something like a beta52 vs my sennheiser 835. So I am pretty new to all this but I'd like a really nice sounding kit. Thanks for your response and thanks in advance to any future responses.

Sounds like you have some nice mic's...why not just get some tom mics if that's all you need?

you're pretty much already there

you can do a decent job of micing a set with 4 mics (overheads, snare, kick), 5 if you want to add a room mic.

i'd get the matched set of 603s. use them as overheads either in XY or spaced pair configuration, depending on which sounds better for your kit. these will make up the predominant stereo image of your kit. note that as discussed elsewhere around here, the 603s may or may not give you good results--that depends on your drums, their tunings, your cymbals, your room and how you strike the drums/cymbals.

the e835 is similar to an sm57/58. i'd use it on the snare.

i'd stick the v67 about 4-6ft out in front of the kick to grab the kit as a whole from in front (the aforementioned room mic).

that just leaves your kick that needs addressing. you may be able to make due with the sound you get from the combo of the V67 and 603s, but you'll likely want a dedicated kick mic. there are many around here that get good reviews--you'll just need to figure out which one sounds best on your kick. no telling which one without trying a few.

YMMV

I agree, the Senn. 835 is a great little mic but not on the kick, it's too bright. I have one and I use it on my snare or hi-hat sometimes or as a vocal mic for a ladie's voice.

I understand using a lot of mics
on your kit if you're close mic'ing because of a bad room. I use 9 mics on my kit for that reason.

DON'T BUY THE SAMSON MIC KIT. IT BITES!!

Try the CAD dum mic kit, it's pretty damn good for the price, with a fantastic kick mic (I own one) or the Audix Fusion set ("F" series). Both of these inexpensive sets are good and they deliver.

I think I might be going to buy the Audix Fusion kit set.(1 kick mic, 2 toms, 1 snare, 2 overheads) at guitar center its like 300 so that sounds good.
Thanks to all

This is my drum mic set-up

Kick - AKG D112
Snare - Sennheiser e604 or SM57 (I've preferred the e604 lately)
Rack Toms - Sennheiser e604
Floor Tom - AT pro 25
O.H. - MXL 603s

I got a chance to use the Sennheiser E602 on kick last night and that thing is SWEEEEEEEEEEET. I have an ATM125 and the senn just blows it away. The ATM was floppy and just kinda there while the Senn was tight and huge sounding. They are only $200 at Musicians Friend right now and considering how important the kick is to the drum sound I think it's a no brainer.
