WHAT IS A SET NECK? HOW STRONG IS IT COMPARED TO A BOLT ON NECK.

A set neck is glued into the body of the guitar. Although it's a matter of opinion, I think most people would go with the set neck as being stronger, but both can last a long time(you see a lot of old strats still around). The biggest difference between set neck and bolt on's, is sustain. Set neck guitars generally will sustain much longer than bolt on's(this is a big part of the Les Paul tone). This is because the glue fuses the body and neck together. This way, the neck is resonating, as well as the body, thus more sustain. Hope this helps

There's also "through-neck," which is when the entire string track from the headstock to the tailpiece is on one piece of wood or sandwiched laminate.

Like set-neck, only better. Usually only on pricier guitars and basses.

And then you get thru-body bridges where you feed the strings in from the back and you have even more sustain. Add to that a heavy headstock and you've almost got infinta sustain. The add an EBow and you've GOT infinate susatian (until the battery runs out that is).
