It's pretty obvious why I'm here....I'm clueless! I've read and researched, and read some more. I am currently using SB 16 PNP (with n-track), which has one MIC in and one LINE in. My ultimate goal is to record 2 separate acoustic guitars and 1 vocal at the same time if possible (capture the whole “live” thing). Doing the math I’m lacking one LINE in.
I had a terrible hissing, but realize I need to learn n-track and practice.
Here is my dilemma:
1. I would like to upgrade to the Ensoniq AudioPCI card I’ve been reading so much about (because it’s cheap and it rated pretty high), but according to all the literature it mentions that it is compatible with Win ’95, but mentions nothing about Win ’98 (which I’m running). Does anyone know out there the answer?
2. Would a mixer be a wise investment? If so, any special type (not brand, mind you, type)?

I would appreciate any insight anyone may have to offer. I am not looking for someone to give me the answer, instead steer me in the right direction.

Thanks!

If it will run on Win'95 it should run on Win '98.
If you only plan to record say, 4 tracks at once then a couple of stereo tube preamps would probably be a wiser route then a mixer. A stereo preamp... say the ART dual MP($200) will get two channels of nice tube warmed audio into your soundcard. Add another for 4 channels.

dual mp for 200? please tell me where? or was that just a number thrown out. thanks

8th street has 'em for $250. I got mine from there for $200 but it was used... Call 'em up and ask 'em if they have a used one for sale. You can even have them give you a call if they get one.

Also remember that the Line-In port on your soundcard is stereo, meaning that you can record 2 tracks at the same time. Using n-Track, you'd set it to record stereo, then split the stereo track into two mono tracks. I've used this technique before and it works well.

This will require that you can pan your inputs hard right and hard left, or your preamp has individual outputs (which you could combine with a mono to stereo Y adapter).

BTW, I recently ordered the single channel ART Tupe MP from 8th Street. It shipped the same day I placed the order, no problems. They're a pretty good company. Free ground shipping too!
