sequencer in cubase sx3?

hopefully that is the name of what I am looking for. I have cubase SX3 and the drumkit from hell 2 vst. I have noticed playing out beats is a little tougher than I imaginged on a keyboard. I used to own a Boss dr-5 drum machine many years back and it was very easy to create drum patterns on there. I am hoping there is something in Cubase SX3 that allows me to create patterns in this fashion, and I am also wondering if the name for what I am looking for is "sequencer?"


I also own an older version of fruity loops, and making patterns is very easy on that progam. Is there a similar function in cubase that alows you to create drum loops and piece them together? If so is it something purchased seperately or does it come with cubase. Also, can I use the sounds from the vst instrument to make these patterns?


if this is in the manual, can someone tell me what section to look under.
 
Well cubase is a sequencer.

What you are probably looking for the step seqencer. There is a couple of different ways to get that sort of hardware drum machine effect so:

Make midi track, route to DFH as output, you keyboard as an input. Set loop points at track start and 1 or 2 bars in (Ctrl click sets left loop point and Alt click sets the right) . Double click on the space between the loop points to make a midi track and hit ctrl-shift-i to open edit in place (or expand the track and press the button). Click the cycle setting on the transport bar to make sure it is in loop. Arm the track to record, hit record and off you go. Everything you record will be seen the the edit in place window. after your done you can easily fix stuff to where it should go in the editor. I would start with auto quanitizing everything 16ths and make sure your 1st beat is on the one note.

I recommend using the metronome and definitely play around with the midi-mix settings on the transport so see what suits u, they affect the way sequencer records the midi notes while it is recording a loop: (Mix/overwrite/keep last/stacked)

Playing drums on a keyboard kinda sucks and a drum pad type midi controller is much better suited for the job (Akai MPD, trigger finger, etc)
 
...or you could use the GrooveAgent. It pretty simple and groovvyyyy... :)

i wouldn't be asking for help if I hadn't read the manual. problem is, I don't know what a lot of the terminology is. so when it says sequencer...in my mind I think...like a drum machine, but I'm not sure, so I ask.

I am not some punk kid, I have never done the recording thing before, . Many of you on here have been at it a long time. While you were sitting on your computer learning the ins and outs of recording, I was sacking quarterbacks in college.

I have done music forever and toured anywhere in the U.S. you can imagine. I know the buisness end of music and work as an agent booking national/international tours. I have bands on Immortal Records, Metal-Blade, Prosthetic, Uprising and Victory Records. I also go to school full time, so as you can see I am swamped and taking the crash course in learning how to record.


All I wanted was some help, and thanks to those of you that did. I purchased the Ignite and power books last night. Those of you that act like punks, I am sure your Karma will take care of you.

This just made me laugh and laugh. I didn't know Mike Tyson could even use a computer, let alone figure out how to do a project in Cubase. Seriously, there are better ways of physically assaulting a guy other than putting his face in your mouth. Getting your tongue all over his hairy face... That's just gross. Unless you're a gay, I guess. That's right, I said "a gay". Cause it's funnier that way.

Anyway, take your meds. Relax. And read the fucking manual. Again. Keep reading it until it sinks into that wacky head of yours. Don't worry, it'll happen. I believe in you, scrappy. You'll figure it out. And you'll be happier that you did it yourself. You'll also be happy because you'll find that the sequencer in Cubase is about 10 billion times better than Fruity Loops. Far more control.

Here's a tip: open a midi track. That's where you'll do your "making drum patterns" thingy.
 
if you don't know the terminology, look it up. i learned cubase 99% on my own with the manual and google. at one point i did'nt know what a sequencer, sampler, or vsti was. i did what anyone with a desire to learn does. i looked it up.

why would you possibly get cubase sx3 if you don't have a clue about what it's features are and if you need those features? if you want the easy way out, get a different program because cubase sx ain't for winey sissies. go ahead. bite my face and then bite my ass. :D

The issue here is we don't have tolerance for software pirates who come here and ask us (who have PAID for their software) how to use it. So, when someone rolls in here asking a question that we know is covered in the manual, then we will say RTFM - it's a basic litmus test.

actually, I didn't buy it. My homeboy rakes in between $15,000 to $25,000 a month on Ebay selling movies that aren't carried in the U.S....maybe they are snuff films, I got no idea, if I did, I'd be doing whatever he is.


he is a picky bastard about his music, and bought a bunch of home recording stuff that he couldn't figure out how to use. I filled in for him playing his guitars riffs and booking his band. He offered to pay me some loot. he had already purchased cubase SX3 because the studio he recorded in, produced some midi drums for him on his new material. Brandon having the loot just went out and bought a bunch of shit.

After becoming frustrated with it, he basically offered it to me as a gift/payoff. I said, okay, I'll take the time to figure it out.

I didn't know what I was getting into, I had to do all kinds of shit to my computer...long story.

all this wind over YOU not doing your home work. hell if you're from FSU you should know all about home work and research. the way i work is, if someone needs help then i will help if that person seems to be making an effort at figuring things out on their own. check my posts and see how many people that i have helped or attempted to help with cubase or basic hardware questions. i don't mind helping at all but why should i waste my time when the person asking for help is sitting on their ass looking to be spoon fed?

as far as all that biting and eatin flesh and shit........... :eek: Mcdonald's has a value menu that may or may not taste better than human flesh but i recommend that you give it a try and see.

also, on your comments about my guitar playing...........the way i see it is that i'm a mediocre guitar player at best. not sleep lost on that one.

I can understand you being annoyed by some of the people here. They tend to jump on a guy like sharks if they so much as suspect they have a cracked or hacked version of Cubase. I've seen them go to all kinds of crazy stalkerish lengths, searching the forum for all their posts, trying to piece together whether or not the person is lying.

I mean uh, on the one hand I could never ever imagine being such a wormy corporate suck ass. Are these people really musicians? The way I see it, if you're worth a crap as a musician you're going to be a little dangerous. A little outside the box. An rebel, outsider, kinda cat. Not the dork who ratted you out in school for shooting spit wads on back of the teacher's head.

But, on the other hand I really do love Cubase. I think the guys at Steinberg have worked hard and made a fantastic product. And they deserve to be paid for it. So I guess it's good that they have these internet minions running around dropping the dime on hackers.

I feel your frustration on learning Cubase too. It's a bitch when you start out. I had a lot of pulling out my own hair moments in the beginning. I'll tell you what helped me a LOT. There are a series of DVD's that I would highly recommend to anyone with Cubase.

There's three of 'em:
Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

They'll answer any and every question you have. Then they'll answer questions you didn't even know you had.

i just got cubase power and ignite, I will work some tips between there and the manual that comes with cubase, I may venture into the dvd's in the future, but I need a good pre-amp first.

on a serious tip, I like offending people at times. Sometimes in my line of work, I get dicked around until I tell someone to fuck off. #1 way to get shows in Las Vegas, is to act like an asshole, Why, I don't know. People don't take you serious there if you don't. It is sort of like dealing with major labels (better known as corporate conglomerate pieces of shit). They try to pull things on you over and over again, and being serious, if you meet with an A and R rep that does this, get them outside where no one can see it or in a bathroom and fucking grab them...let them no you ain't to be fucked with and that they BETTER stay on the level with you. What no one sees can't be proven. These types of things I think are what make me good at what I do. In muisc, you got to posess an edge. I love to smile in public and act very diplomatic, but when no one is looking, I'm like a pit bull, I love to surprise industry maggots when they think they are being COOL! I have had times where it took being physical to get my band (when I was touring), and other bands I deal with on shows. I would deffinately say I'm outside the box, but not in the wrong way. I prefer straight up buisness dealings and making friends, but sometimes, people that are where you want to be, know you want in the loop and treat you like a punk...you can never have anyone hear that your company is weak in this buisness. MMoney rules this game, and when you don't have as much as some of the industry people, you get shit on, by getting physical, you can scare people bad enough sometimes that they are afraid to talk shit, and deal with you on the level. Yeah, you can catch a charge, but you can beat them if you you got witnesses of your own.

I prefer working with bands that think like I do, we get tight, and truthfully,sometimes these bands help in the roughing up of assholes...thats what it means on my website by everyone on my roster is like family, we look out for each other.
