sequencer/drum machine as 'master' to Sonar

This is probably the only place people will be nice enough and brush off my ignorance, so I'll paste here and hopefully not feel like an echo in the woods, or a big dummy for that matter, he he...

Can I use something like the DR-770 drum machine, write my drum tracks in it, and have that be a synchronizable track in Sonar? I mean, make a midi track in Sonar, and hook the drum machine up to it, so that when i create something and hit play on the drum machine, it will cause the recording/playback to start in Sonar with any other tracks/audio guitar etc. that I've created or am creating???

Yes, absolutely. You need to sync the both via MIDI. Go to Options -> Project -> MIDI Out, and tick the checkbox that says "Transmit MIDI Start/Continue/Stop/Clock" and the "Transmit MMC" if you need it (you might want to experiment here)... ;)

You'll probably also need to see what types of sync codes the drum machine likes, and what types sonar sends. I used to do this a lot with midi rigs, with something called song position pointer, which locks to the song, even you start the master (the sonar) somewhere in the middle of it to work. I just bought sonar, and am looking forward to working with it, but can't answer questions yet unless I have the manual in front of me. I'm currently reading it, but don't have it now, am at work. But yeah, you may have to see what kind of code the machine needs to speak to it. Both the sonar and the drum machine may offer various forms, and you may just have to change them to the ones that will work.

Thanks entangle. I'm guessing the best place for me to address ths is at SavedByTechnology, from the midi gurus there when I buy the drum machine next week - I'm sure they know if the DR-770 and Sonar can talk:)

Funny how you plan things and it all goes to hell when you get into it. Was gonna get a POD XT, but the truth is for now, ReValver sounds decent enough, so I'd rather get comfortable creating an atmosphere/setup that I fuind intuitive enough to just hit a couple of buttons when I want to get something down, instead of scratching my head for hours...at how to make it work.

THEN Delta 66/OMNI...THEN POD:):):) Then a really cool keyboard, then some modules, and oh yeah another guitar for alternate tuning. Fender Jazz. Evintide H3000...la la la yes I'm dreaming...

That's no problem, Sonar has the ability to transmit SPP! :)


And I'm pretty shure that Shawn's planning to get the manual, right Shawn?!? ;)
 
Yep. Manual helped a lot with the Edirol. And back in the day, with the Alesis drum machine I used to use, and the D-20. I like manuals:) Manuals good for Shawnie:)

uh, .pdf's not so good. Hate computer reading. LOL
 
You have it easy!

I just hate manuals! Anything that takes 10 pages to explain, is made too complex! I hate BIG manuals! I want the manual to cover every function, but I don't want it to be big... ;)
 
Ya but I only read about 10% of them, the basics, and just get happy with the fact that I'll probably never really know what I'm doing. Like with MIDI. I'm the midiot! LOL
 
i think it would be better if u had sonar control the drum machine instead of vice versa..the drum machine sequencing abilities are no where as near powerful as sonar
 
That's my problem, Sonar is so complicated it's giving me the gibbies every time I have something in my head or I have a song and I'd actually like to get it recorded. I could get the basics of a tune down with the Alesis way back in literally 1/2 hour, and go from there.

I know it will come in time, I'm reading, etc., but I'm...you guessed it, impatient, and a little dense with this MIDI stuff.
