Sennheiser E835

i've used both, i like it better than the SM58 i have (SM57 and SM58 is the same thing). the E835 is a little more open and giving with cheap pre.

i agree with both of these statements. although, in some cases, less beefy in the mids can be a rather good thing. especially if it means getting rid of those sm57 mids. and i do find that the 835 sounds "richer" on the lows (like floor toms)--more boom and less thump.

i prefer the 835 on toms to the 57, to be completely honest. my only problem with em is that they're so damn big. hard to place if a drummer's got low-hanging fruit....errr...cymbals.

BTW i used it for vocal, i like it better. From what i heard, the SM57 sounds really good with 1000 dollars + preamp (no idea what it sounds like but people claims it does so i'll take their words for it), with my cheap preamp (under 100) the E835 sounds better, and i don't think there's anyone that ever stuck an E835 into a 1000 dollars + preamp so i don't have a clue on how it sounds.

the 835 is sennheiser's answer to the sm58. it's flatter in the midrange and has a little nicer high end, IMO. it certainly doesn't have that same midrange bump that the 58's got. the 58 has always sucked on my voice, so for live vocals i use the 835.

the 57/58 does seem to react differently depending on what preamp is being used seems to do just fine through my mackie 24*4, though...........

I am probably one of the few people in the recording universe who has never personally used an SM57 on snare. I have been present when they have been used, but have never used one myself. However, I use the 835 on snare all the time. It does just fine IMO. When auditioning mics for live vocals I chose from 3 candidates: SM58, SM57, and the 835. I chose the 835, so as I now have one around the house, it does double-duty for snare. I found that the 835 and SM57 worked better for my voice, and the 835 sounds more similar to the 57 than it does the 58. But the 835 has a crisper high end than either of the Shures.
