Sebatron Mic Pre

I just read thre HC Forum thread about the "Sebatron conspiracy".... man that is funny!!

To relate an anecdote from my past...

Knew an guy who recorded in his basement, I hired him to produce a demo for me. Demo sucked, he didn't care or at least did not acknowledge. Never backed up is "satisfaction gauranteed" policy.

Over the next few months, I hear from others around town what a sleaze he is, whatever. I should have been more careful.

Anyway, guy leaves town, later I see his reviews in EM. everything he reviews gets drooling good praise, including some products that have ended up in the "everyone wants to get rid of" category.

The rags are in business, the manufacturers are in business, business is always ripe for corruption.

These forums are a great leveler for the small guys like us who seek the truth and not the hype. These discussions are fantastic for keeping us all honest.

peace.

I hope it's good too. More good preamps can only make the world a better place. :)

It's encouraging that Bowisc likes it. I give his opinion a lot more weight than Kurt's. Supposedly Sebatron promised to send a review unit to Fletcher and one to "Dot" quite some time ago, but they haven't done that yet. I wish they would. I'd like to hear Fletcher's opinion and I'd like Dot to post some clips. It's tough to really judge the pre by what Bowisc posted (which is something he didn't record, BTW).

Thanks J.

I did mention that it was not my "work", but that track still sounds very nice, considering everything was tracked with a Sebatron only.

I've been running the 4000e through a lot of sources on different songs. Just like any other piece of gear, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But "overall" I believe the Sebatron is a really great-sounding, well-built pre-amp. Sonically, it is so versatile... I really like the "deep", "air/bright" switches on there. They really let you get creative. I would never say, "it smokes" this, or that, but I wouldn't even say that about my Great River, as good as it is. Because there will be times where it is not the best choice for the application. Simple as that.

FWIW, I was very, very skeptical, especially with purchasing gear overseas, from a company that is not well-known here in the USA, in addition to the marketing "dirt" that came up. But I went directly to Sebatron and I could tell this guy is not out to "con" anyone. And that he was building high-quality, great-sounding gear. I wasn't swayed by anyone's reviews of it... actually I was a bit turned off by some of the seemingly impulsive remarks on the Sebatron pre-amp. So, I basically took, what I felt was a risk. And ordered it. I struggled with canceling my order during the 6 week wait (as promised). I'm glad I didn't.

No regrets. It's a keeper.

"deep" and "air/bright" switches? Why, i believe my Focusrite has switches with funny labels like this. I guess that the Sebatron is a "toy" like my VM pro and will not be taken seriously in the professional world.

Look at the "fat" switch on the Soundelux U195 or the RNC 1733's "Supernice" button. These are not "toys" either.

Let me break it down for you...

- "Air" boosts frequencies just above the range of hearing.
- "Bright" starts the boost around 2-4Khz.
- "Deep" is a 120Hz shelf boost or cut (lo-cut).

Bowisc,

Any chance of hearing a short acoustic guitar/ vocal sample?

Thanks,
Justin

I know. I don't see that these kinds of labels make anything less professional. But someone does.......................

OT: I just got his Sebatron Copernicus analog filter. It smokes the Filterbank in sound quality. The best filter I ever heard or owned. I paid $400 US including shipping and free adapter. The man definitely knows his stuff. He's working on a Valve filter, now that should give Mutator a run for it's money. Forget reviews there useless unless it's by someone you worked with a and have the same taste for gear and same expertise. Judge it by the sound it makes. If you can't find any of these for demo, then try looking for some samples which were used with his products like this website

Cheers
