Does anyone own a Sebatron mic pre-amp? I haven't heard any of these myself, but over at recording.org it got a very good review. Can anyone here enlighten me?

Dingo :)

acorec,

I know you were being sarcastic, but I plan on getting one from the strength of Kurt's review along with some other comments from users that the Sebatron is in the same class of the great pres. I'll let you know how it is when I get it.

Before everyone starts flaming the Sebatron folks and their products due to the post by jslator see http://www.recording.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=001833 Where Bowisc, one of the same folks on the jslator thread asking how the pre sounds, posts a recording done only through the Sebatron unit. He subsequently ordered it and had good things to say. His recording will speak some to the issue of "how it sounds" though there's a whole lot to a mix than just the mic pre.

I don't have an opinion about their product. I don't own one. But, Kurt's review is a little overboard with superlatives. He acts like a newbie who got his first blue-tube. With the roasting that people gave him (Harvey included) about his "opinions" with respect to the RNP, even though he never heard it, I give very little weight to his reviews. I hope it is a great unit for your sake as I hate to see people pay this much for a pre that might be just average.

Well said Rev!

I can't imagine anyone flaming Sebatron's products based on either of the threads I linked to. The first one had to do with Sebatron's marketing, not their products. The second had nothing to do with Sebatron, but rather Kurt Foster.

I'd agree with you on that issue. I thought he was way overboard on his opinions of the RNP given that he never heard it. To top it off he accused Harvey of lacking objectivity (due to Harvey's friendship with the FMR folks), when all Harvey was saying was "don't judge the RNP if you haven't first tried it."

I hope it is a great unit for your sake as I hate to see people pay this much for a pre that might be just average.

I hope it is also. I plan on getting the 2 channel version (~$950) Plus, my opinion is based on more than just Kurt's opinion, although his review (the one with pics) first put Sebatron on my consideration list. I've seen a few purported owners rave about the Sebatron units also (not Pingo and Kat from the jslator thread). I hope to close the deal in a month or so. When I get it, I'll let you folks know my impressions, perhaps with audio samples.

My reference was to your first thread. The thread at times gave the impression that Sebatron (the company) was doing the false raving. It's not entirely clear whether that's true. My comment wasn't directed at you per se. More at the tone of this bbs which is prone to flaming before falsity has been proven... kind of a preemptive strike against flame to judge the pre on its merits and squash all flames until people have practical experience with it to judge it for themselves.

All I've got to say about Kurt Foster is WOW!!! What a fool.

(Dot used to be my blowhard of reference, but he's gotten much better in the last year--almost reasonable even.)

I'd never be able to trust a word he says. He acts like an expert on subjects where he has ZERO technical expertise---

combatively attacking the credibility of actual experts like Harvey and and Ethan Winer.

Can NEVER admit that he might be wrong. And on top of it---makes seriously combative statements, and then locks the threads--or deletes what he doesn't like. All the while claiming that he is trying to be fair and evenhanded.

Maybe he really should be reviewing hamburgers, or flipping them.. heh.

I'll probably get my RO account revoked for this if they see it. (Tears).

I PM'd him for locking the thread. I thought it was a classless move.

I just want to go down on record to say I am not flamint Sebatron in any way. It is only the glowing review that I question. Usually guys who write glowing reviews get a freebie to keep.

It was classless after all the cheap shots he took. But it's his playground.

I hope that the Sebatron stuff IS good. It's at a good pricepoint. I'd actually trust a review from you and Bowisc too.

It was clear you weren't. The air was ripe for that kind of stuff from the thread that jslator posted (nothing against him). As far as "glowing reviews" and "freebies," I think Kurt mentioned getting a reviewer's deal on the unit. He didn't mention how much it was or was not, but I suspect it was not the list price. ;)

Nonetheless, I'm going to see what the deal is with the Seba's.

I hope it's good too. More good preamps can only make the world a better place. :)

It's encouraging that Bowisc likes it. I give his opinion a lot more weight than Kurt's. Supposedly Sebatron promised to send a review unit to Fletcher and one to "Dot" quite some time ago, but they haven't done that yet. I wish they would. I'd like to hear Fletcher's opinion and I'd like Dot to post some clips. It's tough to really judge the pre by what Bowisc posted (which is something he didn't record, BTW).
