I've been playing accoustic for about 15 years but I'm looking to buy my FIRST electric and could use some advice. I was told that Schecter guitars are good. I want something that will allow me to play a wide variety of music, is affordable ($500-700), and has aesthetic appeal.

Also thinking of purchasing a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe amp as well as a Digitech GNX2 Effects Pedal.

Anyone have any thoughts on these purchases? I may try and buy some of it used. Any thoughts on buying stuff like this on e-Bay?

Thanks!

I love schecter i have a walnut satin finish 006 i got for $300 its the 006 diamond series. I would recomend gettin it. i bought mine at a pawn shop and the neck turned out to be warped. but for 60 bucks i had it heat pressed and its just like new. anywaz i would get one very nice guitar for the price.

Schecter makes damn good guitars...you wont be sorrry there...especially the Diamond series.......

hi layer7...I don't want to preach, but get real...man, if you got $700 to spend on a guitar do yourself a big favor—go to e-bay, or check your local for-sale ads and look at the bids/prices on Gibson les pauls...I'm sure Schecter makes some decent guitars, but a les paul with dual-coil humbuking pic-ups is by far the most versatile and reliable elec. guitar made...aesthetic appeal, however, is largely in the eye of the beholder, although even Hendrix occasionally played a les paul...les pauls have always been the most versatile—notice they can be found in nearly any band of musicians regardless of the genre...hell, I even saw one accompany an accordian playing Danish folk-music in a neighborhood pub in Karyp, Denmark...reliability should also be a concern when you're spending as much as $700...reliability isn't merely the likelihood that your guitar will make it through a gig without breaking down...reliability also is a measure of how well (how easily) the instrument can be maintained over a long period of time...because the materials, design, and workmanship found in nearly every les paul is of exceptional quality they are easier to work on—they consistently “respond” very well to whatever adjustments and repairs that may be needed—for a long, long time...ask any experienced luthier why he would rather work on a les paul than practically any other elec guitar and see what he says...the same is generally true of all Gibson electrics...I’ve owned the same 64’ sg since 76’ and it plays like a dream, never goes out of tune unexpectedly, and the harmonics can be set-up as easily as I can tie my boot straps...if I wasn’t so damn happy with my sg, I’d have scrimped and saved up for a les paul a long time ago (some day I will own one)...spend $500 on a new Schecter today and in 5 yrs or so you might be able to off it for $200...spend $700 on a used les paul today and in 5 yrs it’ll easily still be worth $700; in 10 yrs it’ll probably be worth more, not that you’ll want to part with it...if for some reason you ever did part with I doubt very seriously that you’d trade it in for a Schecter, a PRS, or whatever...
regarding e-bay--you normally won't be able to lay your hands on the instrument before you fork over the cash...you can, however, take a look at the seller's ratings...generally, this is a good indication of his/her integrity...whatever you wind up doing, take a look at the gibsons...dean.

Schecters have caught my attention also. They look prettty good. It's good to hear that people like them. Maybe I'll get one.

thanks for the feedback

Thanks a bunch for the feedback. Sounds like most of the room is a fan of Schecters. However, I will be sure to look into a used Les Paul as well... I just didn't think I'd be able to afford one!

I'm thinking I'll buy something in the next month or so.

Any thoughts on the amp and pedal? Again, I want an amp with versatility that can play the warm mellow sounds as well as handle a heavier crunch. Oh ... and one that works well with an effects pedal.

As far as the pedal goes ... I'm not looking to use it to record anything. I just want something that can create a ton of different quality sounds. I also have a new G-4 so I wasn't sure if I could start getting sounds from software. ???

I had a Les Paul Custom about 25 years ago that was the sorriest guitar I've ever had. Would not stay in tune. The gold pickups tarnished. Too heavy to play for long periods without discomfort. I've played some new Les Pauls here lately. (Studio models, I think. ) Also played an SG. They all feel cheap to me. I have yet to play a Gibson guitar that I liked. I know in my innermost being that they are WAY, WAY ( did I say WAY? ) overpriced. Talk about your most overrated guitar.......

All this is, of course, only my humble opinion. I'm sure there are some very fine Gibson guitars out there somewhere.

I have not purchased a GNX2 yet. But I'm close ... hopefully Santa will bring me one (which means my wife will let me buy one!).

I haven't looked at a lot of other pedals but this one seems to fit my needs. Like I said earlier, I don't need any recording features ... just want a bunch of sounds.

How do you guys get different sounds from your guitar? Through a pedal? By running the sound through your computer? Through your amp?

What's the best way?

Also ... any thoughts on buying a pedal on E-bay? Is there a downside?

All you'll really need is that Fender amp, your new electric, and a cord. You'll never look back...

I thought the main cool thing about the GNX3 was the recording capabilities, otherwise there may be other effects pedals out there for a lot cheaper.

I have bought and sold stuff on ebay, just check the feedback of who is selling the item before bidding.

I am not sure what you mean by "sounds". That could mean "strat tone vs tele tone or Les Paul tone." It is best to just sit down with a few pedals/guitars at a store and play around with them.

Not sure if this was covered, but Schecter has at least 2 divisions. One is handmade US and one is offshore. The US one's I have played are very well made and very very solid guitars. The offshore ones, especially the lower end ones are no better or worse than other imports in the price range such as ESP. To me though, very different guitars from the US customs.

So after a mild and amusing search on completed auctions on E-bay, I found pretty much NO les Pauls that closed for $700... unless you count the ones with the name Epiphone in them or the word project.

Yea ... I didn't think I would be able to find even a used Les Paul within my budget. I'm looking to spend around $400.

Concerning the U.S.-built Schecters VS. the imports ... does anyone know what kind of price difference exists between the two?

i believe the US one's run $1000-1500. Like I said, they are fairly different guitars. Closer I would say to an Anderson in some cases.

when I advised you to look at the gibson bids on ebay my intent was not to necessarily suggest that you could compete with these "world-wide bidders"...my intent was to point out that for every gibson les paul that ultimately sells there above your budget there are dozens of others that ultimately sell locally (not on ebay) for hundreds less...the fact of the matter is that ebay represents only a fraction of the total number of used gibsons sold...most of these fine instruments are sold under the diress of financial hardship on the part of the seller, and they go very quickly--no 2 week bidding process open to virtually any rich-fucker in the world who probably can't even play--who wants to "compete" with that shit anyway?...look, there are tens of thousands of used gibsons out there that are just sitting in peoples' closets, and there are probably thousands of them actually being used by people who truely love them and take good care of them...from time to time, and for various reasons, they wind up being sold for very reasonable prices--$500, $600. $700...these are the ones you have to hunt down...no one takes them door to door like vacumm cleaners...
and yes StevenLindsey, I also have played a couple of gibson LP Customs that played like shit--but the reason it played like shit was simply because the idiot who owned the damn thing since 1969 never once took it to an experienced luthier for a neck adjustment or to have the harmonics set-up...duh...even a caddy or a porsche will run like shit if it's not taken care of...there's a good reason why al dimeola, dicky betts, and jimmy page play les pauls...
also, you can find decent deals on the net...in 10 minutes I found these:
Used purchase-- $750 at http://banners.valuead.com/specificpop/Expedia/Site26.html
’87 Gibson LP Studio (wine red/gold hardware)

New guitars—Musicians Friend product # 517199 Gibson ;es paul special $650
Musicians Friend product # 517250 Gibson sg $650
Musicians Friend product # 517222 Gibson sg $650

So if I had taken my guitar to a luthier for a setup, it would have kept it from going out of tune and kept the pickups from tarnishing? Rats! why didn't I think of that. What an idiot! :D
