One other thing you might want to consider is Marshall's AVT series. Very versatile amps. Not the warmest tube sound, obviously, but not bad.

Yea, I was also considering the AVT50.

Maybe I will keep saving a little more so I have more options.

So far I'm considering:

Crate V32
Fender Blues Jr.
Randall
Fender Hot Rod
Marshall AVT50

I don't want a POD or any kind of modeler. I'd rather have a real amp to play with.

I was rather impressed with the tiny little Zvex Nano tube amp. The thing seriously fits in the palm of your hand, will push a 4x12 cabinet, is an all tube class-A design, has a beautiful slightly broken up clean sound, and the dirty is similar to a nice JCM800. And, they are like $400.
These are strictly for recording and practice though, since they are only 1 watt, when cranked, lol. Crazy. Its a cool little amp.

i think youve got a good batch of amps in mind... the only way to pick one is to try them out and let your ears decide. Go to guitar center, (or anywhere else for that matter) and narrow your search field a bit. Who knows, maybe you'll fall in love with one that wasnt mentioned.

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. I kind of wish there was a Guitar Center here. The few shops around here don't really have that big of a selection for amps...

They don't carry the ones I listed, except for maybe the Marshall AVT and the Fender.

Either way I'm gonna start saving now and maybe by then I'll have a bigger budget and more options.

Thanks for all the help so far.

Yeah, they are lovely amps for the money.

The Blues Junior will do your blues and classic rock beautifully (as the name suggests).

Thought about an epiphone valve junior combo? Small, but if it's only for recording, it's got more than enough.

Have an AVT 50...I can get any sound I want out of it.

Oh, yeah, the VJ is awesome.

I would recommend that along with listening to all advice above you check out one of the Tech 21 Trademark modeling amps. There's the Trademark 60 (I had one, loved it and would still have it if I played electric), which is good enough live and has a true sound XLR direct out. They also now have a 2x12 version, but costs more. Then there's the Trademark 10 (cheaper), which is designed as recording amp, also with tube amp sound modeling (all analog, though, these are not digital amps). I also really liked the clean/distorted sounds I got from their GT2 SansAmp, which is a direct box that simulates amps. Some people will critisize these, but try them. And they're cool to get used, they're built like tanks.

Quick question.

I can't seem to find the AVT50 anywhere, but I can find the AVT50X...

Is there any significant difference between the 2? It says the AVT50 has been discontinued.

AVT 50 has been re-packaged asfar as I know, with one or two cosmetic changes. Check it out on Marshalls website.

I know the VOX has some built in digital FX that are'nt great sounding IMO. But theyre bothe essentially 'hybrid' amps; solid state amps with a valve pre-amp. I don't really like VOX's overdrive channel so much (I have a VOX pathfinder which I hate) whereas I like Marshalls clean and OD channels.

So you think the changes are just cosmetic?

I tried the Marshall website and it just takes me to the AVT50X page, no info about the original, and I don't see a page for discontinued products.

Either way I'm not too worried about it.

I think it has a new built in fan....thats all the difference I can see.
