I've heard good things about the xxl, was the GT2 an improvement of just a different flavor?
Peter Tagtgren from Hypocrisy uses a PSA-1. If you are at all familiar with them, do you think the GT2 is capable of getting a similar sound?
Im not familiar with that band, ill check them out on the web this weekend and let you know what my opinion is.
The peavey xxl solid state amps are very good in my opinion, and you can dial in jsut about and gain setting youlike. if i were to find one negative about them or the one i have is, sometimes it is just too damn hot with gain and really bright sounding. those blue marvel speakers are very bright/brittle sounding sometimes. but...............
blend that with a 4x12 cab and you have tone of the gods in my opinion. I also am mostly a pedal stomper as far as gain goes. that is why i use peavey, they are very coplimentary with just about any distortion pedal. They work with just about any pedal you can throw at it. They have a nice clean sound not great, just nice i guess. they are also very reliable.
my distortion is either
a mt2 metal zone(this does sound awsome live with the right settings), sans amp gt2, or the distortion out of the amp. depending on the song. my band does acdc, thinlizzy, godsmack, poison, sabbath, morrisey, bob segar, metallica, and many others so i like to mix it up depending on what song we are doing. I dont like line6 type modleling, or anything like it. so i try to come up with the closest thing i can. also if my other fellow guitarist does the solo, then i try to stay out of his way and cut my gain way back and just support the song, but when its my turn to solo, then i cut loose with whatever the song needs.
again, i feel i have a unique set up for me in my quest to sound sound like myself. I dont think my set up would work at all for a tube amp, or anything that would be considerd a standard or popular setup.
