Sansamp GT2- "phasy" sound?

What kind of marshall do you have?

I think from my perspective, here in "sounds like regurgitated ass land" anything might be an improvement.

if you already have a marshall...

My Marshall is a Artist 3203 half stack. Mid 80's or so. Kicks ass. Sounds like a modded jcm800. I have a Mesa Boogie V-twin in front of it for when I want Boogie tones.

I ran the sansamp into the Marshall just to test it. For the most part, I only use the Sansamp stuff for doing quick recordings or I run it into my Roland JC120 where it kicks ass.

I've read that it really doesn't sound good on tube amps, but sounds slightly better when it goes through the effect loop of one. Same with s.s., the effect loop being preferable to the instrument input, but both inputs on s.s. being preferable to either on a tube amp... Have you found this to be true?

very true. because you're in essence "doubling up" the effect with a tube amp.

but again, it's worth keeping in mind that the sansamp line is not meant to be distortion pedals. they're meant to be amp simulators. tech21 does have some distortion pedals though. the xxl, comportion, and double drive are designed to front an amp or other amp simulator. Subsequently, they sound like crap going direct to a recorder or mixer.

So what would the designation be for the PSA-1?
Is it meant to run direct, or is it meant to go in front of a guitar amplifier?

PS1 is their topline amp emulator meant to run direct. It's basically a midi controllerable and rackmounted version of the Sansamp Original/classic.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that emulators can emulate the sound, but not always the feel or dynamic. I can get kick ass Marshall sounds out of my Sansamp stuff, but it doesn't feel the same as just cranking my Marshall. 9/10 listeners or audience members can't tell the difference, though so what to use depends on my mood and back that day.

Gt2

The Sans Amp GT2 has been one of my few keepers for >10yrs.
I love the recording side of it with it's clean tone. used fenders and gibson.
have tried others and this little thing catches the amp+57 better than anything else I tried. (clean tone only).

never thought much of the distortion sounds and never used it thru an amp.
(disclaimer: never been happy with my distortion Guitar recordings)

very well built=awesome quality...10+yrs no issues, ever.

nice little unit for that late night <clean> Guitar track
whilst the others sleep.

heard the bass sans is even better.

The bass driver may be easier for creating clean tones. It is great for "Fender" sounds.

Coolcat have you tried the GT2 with a distortion unit in front of it? You may be surprised by the results. Just take a distrotion unit you like and give it a go.

i just used my GT2 live this weekend.

I used it as a stomp box in front of my amp. It sounded amazing. I used it at this show as just a lower gain distortion for ceratin classic rock songs that dont require a huge chunk, but rather a nice bright distortion where all the strings in a chord are heard, also used it on some solo's and to my ears the solos really cut nicely as well as it had that nice clarity type sizzle to the sound, especially with a little delay.

the settings were....

level at 10oclock
highs at high noon
lows on full 100%
gain at high noon
mic center
british amp model
gain setting was on the high gain setting(the middle one)

after typing this, i think i could get by with just the triac, instead of the gt2 with this type of settings and application for live use.

it sounded really good, especially on ACDC tunes.

peavey xxl 2x12 combo, solid state.
I've heard good things about the xxl, was the GT2 an improvement of just a different flavor?

Peter Tagtgren from Hypocrisy uses a PSA-1. If you are at all familiar with them, do you think the GT2 is capable of getting a similar sound?

Im not familiar with that band, ill check them out on the web this weekend and let you know what my opinion is.

The peavey xxl solid state amps are very good in my opinion, and you can dial in jsut about and gain setting youlike. if i were to find one negative about them or the one i have is, sometimes it is just too damn hot with gain and really bright sounding. those blue marvel speakers are very bright/brittle sounding sometimes. but...............

blend that with a 4x12 cab and you have tone of the gods in my opinion. I also am mostly a pedal stomper as far as gain goes. that is why i use peavey, they are very coplimentary with just about any distortion pedal. They work with just about any pedal you can throw at it. They have a nice clean sound not great, just nice i guess. they are also very reliable.

my distortion is either a mt2 metal zone(this does sound awsome live with the right settings), sans amp gt2, or the distortion out of the amp. depending on the song. my band does acdc, thinlizzy, godsmack, poison, sabbath, morrisey, bob segar, metallica, and many others so i like to mix it up depending on what song we are doing. I dont like line6 type modleling, or anything like it. so i try to come up with the closest thing i can. also if my other fellow guitarist does the solo, then i try to stay out of his way and cut my gain way back and just support the song, but when its my turn to solo, then i cut loose with whatever the song needs.

again, i feel i have a unique set up for me in my quest to sound sound like myself. I dont think my set up would work at all for a tube amp, or anything that would be considerd a standard or popular setup.

Irregardless, my GT2 is on the way, along with my Schecter C-7 blackjack!

When I see the fedex guy, I might hump him. :D

Congrats on the GT2!

Sorry I found this thread a little late. However, my opinion would help justify your purchase.

In particular, as you may recall, I use a PSA-1 and a GT2. For comparison, I also use a Mesa/Boogie Quad and a TriAxis. If I had to choose just one, I might actually choose the PSA-1.

Regarding using it with an amp, I sat in with a band for a set. Because I like being sure I can get the tone I desire, I brought the GT2 for insurance. I ended up using it as a pedal in front of the other guitarist's Marshall combo (can't remember the model). It worked perfect for my tastes. In fact, after the gig, the other guitarist liked my tone so much he started asking about the GT2.

Regarding using a SansAmp live, I used to play in a band where I was also the soundman. While I used the PSA-1, if I didn't have it I would have used the GT2. The reason being is 1. I like predictability in my tone and ease to tweak it quickly, which can be a pain with tube amps, 2. I don't like spending a lot of time lugging a big rig around and setting it up, and 3. The SansAmp stuff makes it easy to get an awesome mix without worrying about stage volume.

Regarding recording, I often will switch between the GT2 and the Mesa/Boogie stuff depending on my mood and if I want to crank something out quickly (like JR#97). Volume level obviously isn't an issue for me. Here's an example of the GT2 with the British tone on one side and the California tone on the other (can't remember the exact settings)...

I gotta warn your fedex guy to wear a chastity belt... :)

Thanks for the info, it's good to know. That will ease my "buyers' remorse".

Really old news. A couple of years old. Ex and I went out separate ways. Worked out for the best for both of us. I don't know who that Nikki girl is aside from the fact she's an acquaintance of Sondra (Gossippee)'s. Sondra is a succubus I'm currently seeing. ;)

I hope the FedEx guy turns out to be a girl for ya... Dry hump away!
