I've asked this question on another forum, and I got some interest, but no real definitive answer. I thought I'd ask here.
In my never-ending quest to add more voices to my mic cabinet, this little kick drum mic keeps surfacing and calling for attention. I've never heard it in action, and I've always been ready to dismiss it because it's a Samson. To be fair to Samson, they have been getting better and do produce some products that people like.
One of the drum salespeople in a Sam Ash store that I frequent keeps raving about this mic, and I always dismiss it as young zealousness. Then I started reading about it and one thing in their description struck me as curious: "as well as a diaphram this unit employs a humbucker coil to eliminate buzz." What does this mean? Have they come up with something new and innovative, or is this just so much BS?
I am currently using an ATM25 on kick and I also have a CAD KBM412 for certain heavy rock effects, but I was thinking about this as maybe a more passive kick drum mic. It's only about $100, which is not expensive for a mic,
but, $100 is still $100 and I don't need another piece of crap laying around collecting dust. I went and saw it in the case and dismissed it as no good because it is small, then I came home and looked at my ATM25 and it's small and I love it.
Has anyone here used it? Is it a viable mic, and what are its characteristics?
