Strange person.
I can get a samson C01 new for AU$109. Other cheap condensors over here like the SP B1 and the berry B1 cost $200.
Is it worth it?

You will find a lot more than AUS$90 difference in quality if you go with the SP. I rarely bash cheap gear (because that's what I use and I'm inexperienced).

However I have no real qualms in telling you that the Samson CO1 is a crappy sounding microphone.

Samson C01 is a small diaphragm (16mm) electret condenser mic.
SP B1/ Behringer B1 is 1" large true condenser mic.

Our band uses C01's as drum overheads for live performance (where they do a decent job), but I wouldn't use them for recording work. I plan on replacing them soon with Shure SM81's.

While I think the Studio Projects B1 is a much nicer mic than the Samson, I don't believe the Samson CO1 is a small diaphragm electret.

yeap...try looking at any other studio projects mics you can get cheaper too..oh yeah and the MXL 67v should be the same price if not 10 less than the behringer b1 and/or the sp-b1

Would a Behringer c-1 for AU$75 be a better buy than the samson for $109 (ebay..?)?
Where can you gat a Berry C1 from?
I decided that to use as your main vocal mic it isn't worth getting a C1 of either brand. Save your pennies and get a better mic. I got my MXL V67g from the USA via eBay for AU$215 including express postage and the Western Union fees at the post office and I love it. The whole LDC but really a SDC thing was a bit wierd so I got a LDC that I knew had a 1 inch diaphragm.
Look into this deal:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3746819132&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
I was thinking about geting it so asked the guy selling and he said that he'll still give a US$30 rebate if you use Western Union to get cash to him within 24hrs. 10-12 day shipping is US$31. Not sure what the Western Union fees are but so far that's an AU$145 mic.
If you're really desparate for a condensor mic it may sound wierd but still I often use my ecm8000 to record with. As long as you have a decent room they do the job. I've had a lot of fun recording vocals in the bathroom with it :D .
CC's light and sound have them in stock for $89

It is 3 micron, small diaphragm (19mm), hypercardioid pattern, but not electret as it takes 36-52 volts phantom power.

Nope. In Australia the list price (off hand) for a V67g is AU$499. SP B1 is $199 and the Behringer B1 list price is $249

A lot of electret designs use 48v, it is regulated down for the actual voltage req'd in the mic.

Enchilada,

Contact Nigel at http://www.oceania-audio.co.nz/ ...........they are the SP distributor over there and pricing is usually more than favourable and they're happy to ship across the Tasman.

Hey Ausrock.
I've seen a couple of times that you've put up a link to that site but I can't find any product listings on their website

....if its 499........what the hell is the minimum wage in australia?

Ench,

They don't list products from memory so just email Nigel at Oceania and see what he says.

Distorted,

It's not so much a reflection on wages..........it is the importer/distributor's pricing structures. They want to make their pound of flesh, then the stores have to make their profit.

Apart from Behringer who arseholed their distributor, then set up their own "office" here allowing them to drop prices dramatically, Alan Hyatt/Studio Projects has been the only manufacturer to listen to complaints from Aust., and then make an effort to get his distributor to bring prices down regardless of exchange rate influences.

True, they can and many times do use 48v. But in my admittedly limited experience, electrets ususally specify a voltage range starting at 15 volts or so up to 48-52v.
Also the CO1 appears to have its capsule capacitively coupled to the usual FET gate and 1G resistor as most of the Chinese (and other) externally polarized capsules are. I'm not familiar with any electret capsules other than the Panasonic types, which have the integral FET in the capsule housing itself, though I'm sure others exist.

I'll email them and see if I can get a price list.

Too true, filthy bastards.

P.S. I'm testing my signature

The list price is $89... but ask for the best price.
You'll notice it says "Coming 2004". Also, Music 123 here in the states still lists it as "On order". Somebody there wrote a review of it April 2004 (when it was on sale for $30), but it sounds like BS - I doubt if he's ever used one.

So I doubt if it's for sale yet - maybe some production problems?
