Saffire 24 PRO/Phantom Power/Microphone Problems

So since Christmas I got a couple of presents to get myself into the home recording business. I received a Focusrite Saffire PRO 24 (firewire), and an MXL V63M microphone with shock mount.

To my understanding the MXL requires phantom power to run, which is a fairly new term for me. So I go out to Guitar Center to get an XLR cable to a 1/4" jack to connect to the Saffire. I use Garageband as my recording software and I get no sound coming from the microphone whatsoever. My input and output settings are correct, so don't worry about that. I tried other software and I get the same problem. So I look at the FAQs booklet from the microphone and it says that if I use an XLR cable to a 1/4" jack it won't work. So how am I suppose to connect my microphone to my audio interface if I can't use an XLR to 1/4" jack? What do I do? I returned the jack and exchanged it for a cord with both XLR plugins on each side and I can't find it anywhere on the Saffire that will fit.

So if the FAQ booklet says the XLR to 1/4" jack won't work, what will?

I found the answer, I didn't know the Focusrite ports were able to have the XLR cables fit in. I thought it was only the quarter jacks that could fit. Brain fart. :P

+48v is Phantom power. XLR has 3 prongs, instrument cables have 2. That 3rd connector becomes a gateway for the phantom power when used. Your condenser cant be powered without it.

It's no big deal. Buy a normal XLR cable. Your Saffire will take that. Just use XLR, there's a reason why mics have that hookup.

And XLR is also a grounded wire, that 3rd prog is specifically a ground. So you'll lose the buzz that a 1/4" end produces.
