Hello everyone!!!
this is a song I recorded a couple of weeks ago for my friends band =)

This isn't a final mix but I'm just wondering what U guys think =)

The song is called "Lock Down"
and U can find it at http://listen.to/sabith

and I know it kinda cuts off at the end.... but the whole thing didn't upload..... stupid......

tell me what eqipment you used..then I'll tell you what I think.

what I used.....

well.... all done with 1 RS mic and a Porta 2.....

or not......

hehehhe I used an NT-1 and a SM57 fer mics, Gadgetlabs Wave 424 fer recording with Cakewalk 9.0, Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro mixer, Behringer MDX 2200 compressor, Tannoy Reveals and an amp U have never heard of....... and cables/connectors aren't anything special......and thats my little studio

thx fer the reply,

Sabith

ok, dont take this the wrong way..but I think you can get a much better sound than what you got. Some of it sounds ok, but needs much work..keep recording and always *listen*, thats the best talent when recording.

I am not a recording genius...I just play one on this bbs....nice song, but there are some things (in my opinion) that could be improved on.....I think the vocal is a little TOO much up front, and a little tastefully applied reverb would be cool...singer's gotta good voice, but the drama of it is over with each ending syllable....the bass needs to be backed off, but not necessarily with volume, eq could work wonders with that....I liked the guitar and drums sounds but they were too far back in the mix to really get a handle on...some panning/separation would help a lot to show them off....let 'em play off each other.....if the vox and bass were cut volume-wise, then maybe you wouldn't have to bring the guitar and drums up much...because you recorded everything pretty hot as it is, I think....just my unqualified thoughts and ears...somebody else might suggest something else, or say everything's ok as it is....gibs

Expand plz =)

Hey Ametth can U expand on your answer a little???
and when U say U don't lie the sound U mean EQ/mic it better or bring it out in the mix more???

I'm fine with the answer just can't really go with it to far....

and how'd U know I recorded everthing really hot gibs???
o ya.... and when recording digital is it better to rec really hot??? how much headroom should I leave??
(I'm still new...)

Sabith, I just sorta felt it was really hot, plus my winamp's view lines were huge and all over the place while I was listening......don't know about recording dig hot, because i'm still stuck in analog for most stuff, but in my (really very) limited experience, when I can get more than one track down on the computer, hot is better in that medium for me.....might be my equipment, though...surely somebody else here has a more informed view of hot digital recording technique?....gibs

I heard digital clipping all through the piece. Hot is good for a digital recording- just watch out for that wall!
Both the guitar and the drums seemed way too distant. The drums so much so it sounds like you had the mics in another room and were just picking up the sound through a wall.

The drums sound kinda far away and lack definition. The distorted guitar could use some beefing up too, maybe double the track.

The vocals and clean guitar sounded pretty good. I agree with Gibs about some reverb on the vocals, or maybe some subtle delay. Little things can improve the mix a lot. Keep referencing similar material on CD and try to pick out what they're doing in their mixes.

Thx fer the comments =)

Well...... thanks for all the comments guys =)
Since the first post I have done many a remix..... and things are a more even now.....

I'm re-recording the geetar n bass because when I fliped on solo and listend carefully there was distortion...... thats where it was coming from =(

but while I'm at it.... I'm layin 2 tracks each to make it sound more beefy. So I might repost the song sometime.... I don't know, or might post another one....

Plus I forgot to mention.... the drums were recorded with a SM57 on kick, and a NT-1 fer overhead..... thats all I have....*sigh*, they have a couple mics but they don't have balanced connectors and I remember seeing somewhere that putting phantom pwr through an unbalanced connecter can get ugly.... but maybe I'm wrong....

But regardless, thanks anyways,

Sabith

I was just gonna post some other suggestions..but everyone else has pretty much covered it. I do have a few though. The thing I thought could improve the most is the clarity, everything seems muffled to me, I'm not sure how you can correct that...I'd have to come visit you and see what your room looks like, etc..I do have some suggestions though.

#1: Mics: If that all you have heres what I would do (and remeber this is just what I would do). on Drums I would put the rode out in front anywhere from 2 to 6 feet, just off the kick drum, to capture "the kit"..behind the drummers right hand side I would put the sm-57, to capture the snare toms and some cymbals..play with these mic positions and I think you mau like what you hear.

#2: I may be wrong here, but that sounds like a bad solid state guitar amp, I think if you back of the distortion just a bit, put a little more mids in there, you'll get a beefy guitar tone. But in my little world, I hate solid state amps..tube amps are much much better..if you can rent one, I would...as far as micing goes, I would stereo mic. using the 57 up close and the rode anywhere from up close to a few feet back, whichever sounds the best..and definetly double or even triple track those heavy guitars.

#3: The guy has a good voice..I would just wet it a little.

#4: when recording digital, you wanna get as hot (close to 0db) without going over!! digital distortion is bad :), so as to take advantage of the S/N ratio..
