I've read on a few threads that Home Depot carries Roxul Safe n Sound. I was thinking about getting some of this. I checked online but i don't see it. I was wondering if anyone knows home much it is. I just want to make a few panels for my room for vocals/mixing. Also, i've read you need to wrap it in batting. I'm pretty dumb to this stuff and i don't know what batting is. I read you could get it at walmart but what dept is it in and what does it look like? Also(last question :D), what national store sells burlap? I've never bought either of these items(roxul, batting, burlap) and i just need a little help.

Hmmm, well batting means one of (at least) two things: fiberglass insulation, the kind that you cram in walls, comes in batts and is sometimes called batting. The other kind you get in a craft or sewing store, it is fill material used for quilts, it comes in big plastic packages that look like pillows (it is a fluffy white material that comes in sheets, rolled up). That and burlap fabric should be in the fabric section at Wal-Mart, or in any sewing store.

Thanks for clearing that up for me! I know nothing about insulation so this is new to me. I sure wish that lowes had the roxul safe n sound. As far as i know, they don't. In my city, walmart and lowes are right across the street from each other. Home depot is like a 35 min drive from my house.

call them up. call lowes too. maybe they can get it and save you some driving time.

the panels are usually wrapped in fabric. i have'nt heard about the batting thing.

If you are gonna goi that route. I will give you some info. The Safe N Sound is 3 pcf(midrange) for bass absorbtion, you wanna get the drain board. The only name I knwo it goes by is Roxul Drainboard, it comes in 1.5 inch thick, 4 X8 sheets, butmore importantly it is 8 pcf...... so it is great for bass traps.

I'm actually in the middle of a bass trap DIY project myself. I went to the Home Depot and looked for Roxul products today bud didn't find any. I went to the Pro Desk and asked them to check on:

Owens Corning 703
Roxul Safe n Sound
Johns Manville 817
Ottawa Fibre products, specifically the OFI-48 and OFI-64

I've read that all these are roughly equivalent. I haven't heard back from them yet.

My other research has shown, ATS Acoustics, Acoustimac and Ready Acoustics all sell 703 for $17.97, $16.5 and $15 per 2x4 sheet repsectevly and that includes shipping. Ready Acoustics makes you buy 12 sheets though.

If I don't hear from HD soon and can't find any other sources in LA, I"ll be going with Ready Acoustics.

You should check out local building supply stores, they will have it for sure.

VSB, I've searched the online yellow pages for "insulation," "heating", and "HVAC." But the stores those searches bring up don't even know what I'm talking about when I call...I'll try building supply next. Thanks.

You can always contact the manufacturers directly and ask for the nearest dealer. I bought my mineral wool board from Specialty Products and Insulation, but their nearest location to you is SF.

If you are in the South Bay area try Superior Insulation in Los Angeles. Sorry I don't have the phone number handy.

Ended up finding some 703 at CWCI Insulation of L.A. out in City Of Industry...after the Home Depot called and said they couldn't get any of it. I paid $192 for 12 pieces of 703. Not quite as cheep as Ready Acoustics, but I have it now and can start this weekend.

Not to bust your bubble or anything but I paid like $.89 per sq. ft. for the same thing.

Bubble burst... :(

I'll just tell myself you bought yours ages ago or maybe was that for 2" thick or 1" thick? It might be worth the $100 difference to head back to City of Industry.

BUT, a few preliminary Google/Yahoo searches aren't showing any hits for "superior insulation" in LA. ARGH!

which @ 8sq ft x 12 pieces = $85...

Yeah... I did the math too :( Notice how I mentioned the $100 I would potentially have saved?

But it seems low from what I found online, and without being able to verify the existance of "Superior Insulation" in or around LA... I may just get started on the project. Heck, my time's worth something too ya know?

I got my 703 from CWCI in the City of Industry east of LA. In general you will not find the right stuff at Home Depot. It will all be either too loose or too dense. You want the 3-5 pcf stuff.

The problem with buying 703 or equivalent online is that it must be shipped UPS oversize and costs a fortune in shipping as a result.

So did you pay about what I did? ...not that it matters now since it's already in my bass traps.

BTW, this thread has gotten me my first neg. rep... anonymous and with profanity! Gotta love the 13 year-olds on this board sometimes.

out here in NY, 2" x 24" x 48" OC 703 can be had for $40 for a box of 6 sheets. Anyone in the NY area that needs it, call J&S supply in Long Island City. Not sure of the phone number, but Im pretty sure they have a website, look it up

Good find! It's amazing the price differences we see. Seems crazy that the mailorder places can even stay in business with what they charge given the price you found in NY! Of course if I had to pay shipping on top of that...
