I have two options for recording my drums in. I have a DW Satin Oil kit (13" 16" 22" kick), DW 14" bronze snare, 12" zildjian special recording hihats, 20"k custom dark ride, 18" and 19" z custom rock crashes, 19" k custom dark china. i'm recording with 2 firepods using two 57's on the snare, beta 52 on the kick, 57's on the toms, groove tubes gt-55 on the hats, oktava mc-012 on the ride, audio technica 4050s for oh's and i'm looking to borrow/rent some ldc for rooms.

i can either record in an acoustically treate room (no paralell walls and foam/bass traps up) that's really pretty dead. it's about 12 by 11 with 7 foor ceilings and a carpeted floor. or i can record in an attic with hard wood floors that's absolutely huge. the room, vertically, is like a triangle so there's no paralell walls again and it's a pretty open sound.

i'm recording heavy rock music, am a hard hitter, and kinda dig the way the drums sound in both rooms. i'm not sure which would come out better in a mix though...slightly live drums or the more dead drums. standing waves don't seem to be a problem, and the attic seems to be a lot more unforgiving (made me really pay attention to the tuning of the kick for example). i'm at a loss of which would be better. i know this is a taste kinda thing, but i wouldn't mind hearing everyone's personal tastes. thanks!

I'd pic the room that the drums sound better in, then you just have to capture the drum sound rather than create it in the mix.

So this is really a dead room VS live room poll...plus we get to read through four lines of hey check out my set-up.

Thanks.

well he did say that it both sounded great in both rooms so he's just askin us for advice.

well....
i'd go with the dead and just fixmix if it's too dead.
little verb wouldnt hurt.

Oh I see. Hmmm.
Since it's a Satin finish, I'd go with the live room.
Should you ever switch to a gloss finish or Paiste cymbals, then obviously you'll want the dead room.

How come you've only got 4 'I'm an Ass' chiklets?

I'd have thought you were a far bigger ass than that

Looks like he made it to 5.

Anyways, If you got time, do a rough demo of the drums in both rooms to see which you like better in the mix. You can always add verb to the dead room. You probably wouldn't need too with the live room, but may end up with shades of natural verb that don't fit well with what you're trying to accomplish with the rest of the mix.

Describing the rooms really doesn't allow anyone to give you any solid advice... Why not demo each room and post the clips for us to hear nd then we can give you our opinions....?

:)

Thanks for all the help, I'll try and demo out the rooms and post the clips as suggested and see what you guys think. Thanks again!
