Room mic on drums.

WOW....The room mic really seems to pill the kit together.

But in the past I have always lined up the kick, snare and toms up with the overheads to try and eliminate phase canceling.
If I do that with the room mic It seems to lose the "big kit" sound.
Should I be lining the room mic with the rest of the kit?
Should I be lining up any of the mics up?

I'm pretty new to recording and mixing drums, but I just put my files in Sonar or Audition, pan the overheads, and start mixing. (I have 4 mics....a pair of OH's, kick and snare.)

So far, I haven't noticed any phase in my stuff....maybe I'm that bad....

I wouldn't time/phase align the room mic, since it is adding the natural room reverb.

yeah, the reason why the room mic sounds good is because of its slight delay. moving it back in phase will get rid of this quality. also, its probably not canceling out any signal because its most likely far enough out of phase that the signals are completely different at any given time point, not 180 degrees out of phase with eachother.

Put em where they sound the best...

Use your placement diagrams as a starting point, but if you're finding that you're getting the biggest sound close mic'ing the kick and snare and another mic under the stairwell, so be it!

Go with what your ears tell you

What's the most commonly used type of mic? Dynamic? Condensor? Ribbon?

In a 20'X30' room, about how far would you put the mic?

Of course I'll experiment myself when I get around to doing it, but a starting point would be nice. Thanx.

the most often used would probably be an omni condenser, but lots of people use other type's of condensers and ribbon mics.

put the mic where it sounds good. in your room I would personally put it at least 10 foot away, but it would probably be more pleasing further than that.
