I adjusted the truss rod on my SX 5-string bass and ended up putting more bow in the neck that I liked. So I went to straighten the neck by loosening the truss rod and ran into a surprising discovery. The hex head at the end of the truss rod is SCREWED on. This means that as long as you are tightening the truss rod, you're fine. But when you go to loosen the truss rod, all you end up doing is unscrewing the head of the truss rod, not turning the truss rod itself. I would strongly suggest that you rethink this method of truss rod assembly because it makes it impossible to turn the truss rod counterclockwise. As you know, this is not good at all.

So what do you suggest I do to loosen my truss rod?

The damn end-cap of the truss rod just unscrewed right off the truss rod! Now what?

I don't know what to expect from their customer service dept, although I've heard good things from other people. But come on, why would you possibly include a piece that will readily unscrew from a truss rod? That's like having the head of a wood screw unscrew from the screw itself! Pointless!

Does anybody know if this is a common design element of cheapo guitars and basses, or is their design team just high?

Fuck . Light? Muttley? The nut does move on threads, so eventually it can come off. Not like this, though.

Just in case anybody cares, Rondo customer support responded right back to my email and offered to let me return the bass. We exchanged a few emails, and they always replied quickly and curteously. The guy said that in all of the SX bass truss rods he's adjusted, he's never seen this problem. He concluded that mine must be defective and offered to take back the bass.

I'll give their customer support an 'A' for this one. Even though I'm still surprised that anybody would use a screw-on end cap for a truss rod.

Go to your auto parts store and get some Lock-Tite, the kind you would use when you NEVER want to be able to disassemble something. Put that stuff on the threads of the end-cap, screw it on tight, and let it harden. You'll be in business. That stuff won't break loose until you put about 100 foot-pounds of torque on it.

rondo

i have been dealing w/ curt @ rondo for around 5 or 6 years they are great people they will do whatever it takes to make there customers happy.... i only had one problem w/ a sx guitar [bad pickup selector] they offered me another guitar, they offered to pay for the repair, they were very cool .... i ended up puting in a sw my self ........ but it was very cool of them to offer all that they did ........... the red locktite should work in case you go that route .......... :D

Thanks (and you, too, dave) - I couldn't remember if it was the red stuff that was for permanent assembly.
