What exactly is roll-off, and why do I or don't want it in a mic?

Thanks...

The closer you put a mic to a sound source, the more fundamental (low end) frequencies it picks up. A bass roll off would kill these low frequencies if that's what you want. Also useful for vocals in "less than ideal" rooms that might have a low frequency hum in the mic.

it's not bad for rumbling furnaces, mic stand resonances, passing trucks, and low flying planes too!

For me it's like an 'idiot' switch. I always put too much low end into my music, so it helps me remove the nasty junk at the first part of the chain.

The roll off also helps with vocal pops, but works best in combination w/ a pop filter.

I like a mic with a good roll off switch but when a good mic does not (such at the NT5) I just roll off on the EQ before or after tracking.
