Wtf is a PRS
Firstly... yes i know i need to update my Workstation but....

Simple question....probably an impossible answer..

How can i do a stereo mix down to one track into my lap top from my Roland Workstation.

IF your familiar with the roalnd you know the outputs.

All i have on my laptop for a line is is the microphone jack.

Am i Screwed?

Also...

I have tried using RCa connections out of the master outs on the roland to my mic input on my laptop...

and it works.. but there is two problems..

It goes to mono.... and

there is alot of "atari" like noises in the background and electronics bips and bops...

But when i do this connection on a regualr Tower type P.c. the noises are gone but the signal stays mono...

It sucks

And its frustrating.

Are you using the right cables/adapters?

You can get a dual RCA to 1/8 inch stereo plug -a cable or adapter...it should work fine on getting a stereo feed into the laptop.

Unless your line in on the laptop is only mono...then I don't think you have a good workaround.

Do you have the CD burner for the 880? Another option if you don't, would be a stand alone CD recorder....

i have the first of the cables that you mentioned. thats what i tried.

I do not have a line in.

But i talked to the buddy at staples today and he is going ot check but thinks the mic jack on the model of my laptop is also a line in??? And might be a setting in the Windows recordings to get the stereo to work...

im at work and cant check this but it sounds like it might be the answer...

NOw the only thing to overcome is the atari noises which i think might be the wiring in my aprtment may not be correct. hhaha

love the slums.

but thanks for your help.... i guess my thinking isnt to far off then.

And no i cant find the stand alone cd burner for that roland model ANYWHERES!!!!

I gave up about a year ago trying to find one.

you can do it...but why?.....crapy single trasfer...just get a card update 9for your laptop...with spidif

Don't be too hasty at trashing the little 880EX. It has been used for movie soundtracks among other things. Don't be fooled by the hype.

Are you talking about the CDR III? I'm not that familiar with the 880; I've got a 1680 and the Plextor CD Burners that are compatible are still on ebay pretty regularly.

Do you have a zip drive? I ask because if you haven't been out to the vsplanet forum lately or ever, there's some sharp folks who have cracked the RDAC compression, so that Roland files from external drives or CDs - individual tracks - can be brought into a pc. They're in the process of eventually doing this for many formats for most or all vs recorders. Check out several posts in both the 1680 and 2480 subforums for details.

what are you suggesting. that i hang onto it?

It has lots of little benfits that i have seen, the only problem i have now is just transferring and dumping tracks to my software. To be honest....

The best BAss and vocal tracks i have ever recorded were on that VS.

bass Espically.

It's easy to do a digital copy. It takes some tweaking at first, but you can do a digital COPY through the spdif connection, 2 tracks at a time, and ALL tracks from each song will be in sync, as long as the MIDI is hooked up. Do this copy into something like Cakewalk, and then do whatever you want with all the tracks. Maybe I'm not understanding your question, because it's even easier to do an analog type copy from the 880 to a computer with the correct cables. Just get a cord from Radio Shack. 1/8" stereo jack on one end and 2 rca jacks on the other end. It will depend on your soundcard & settings, and recording program whether you get 1 track or stereo tracks recorded. You may have to pan the 880 depending on those other parameters to get what you want. I can't remember if Cakewalk will do it, but I think Sonar can record stereo on 1 track. I guess I don't really know what you are trying to do...? But if you don't need the money, why get rid of it. It can always be synched to another piece of gear freeing up more tracks for what you may consider less important. Where do you live, I'll buy it. :p

I've gotten pretty lazy with mine. I just switch hard drives when They get full. Some day before the magnetism fades and I have the time, I WILL do some digital copies into Sonar or Cakewalk.
