RODE NT1A buzz (windlike noise)

Good evening everyone,

I have some problems with RODE NT1A (just bought it few days ago). I can hear the constant buzz sound, like the voice of heavy wind. The mic is connected to GAP PRE-73 but it's probably nota an amp issue or wires, because it works perfectly on other mics. It is probably not computer fan too. Any ideas about it? I can attach a sound file tomorrow.

The Rode NT1A has a reputation for being a mike with extremely low self-noise. The brand itself is not known for delivering bad products.

On that basis, I would suspect something else being the problem, rather than the Rode.

Some things to try are:

1 Plug the NT1A straight into your interface (bypassing the GAP altogether).

2 Trying a different mike cable

3 Reducing the gain and output levels of the GAP and trying that again.

If none of this works, then maybe you have suffered the unusual event of getting a bad mike.
 
Yes it does sound to be a bad microphone.

You didn't mention if you purchased it new or second hand.

Is it a buzz or a wind noise? I know that sounds picky but (to me) those are two very different things.
A buzz could be as simple as EMI from lighting or something.

I've heard of wind/rushing noises from mics that got damp, and I've also seen a few guys on here with that complaint but with no solution.

You said it's probably not a computer fan; Does that mean it could be some kind of acoustic noise? Something in the room actually making a sound? Dimmer switch, air-con, florescent lighting, fridge?

What type of interface and computer are you using. USB and laptop? and what are the other mics you've tested.

Yes.
Every time I read a new post about wind noise all I can think of in the back of my mind is .....
Time for a new diaphragm. Or a ship it off to Micheal Joly for modification.
 
Rushing noise could be a moisture problem (or a bad capsule), but it could also be an under-voltage or under-current phantom power supply. Check the supply voltage both with and without the mic attached.

This is a completely new one RODE. I use phantom from GAP PRE-73. I connect preamp to firewire interface behringer fca202.
This is definitely a windlike noise rather than buzz.

I have attached mp3 sample of that noise,I hope ths can bring ideas.
It is not on high gain,just not very high settings.

maybe the mp3 I uploaded is not good, because I couldnt even hear it (I am not in home but in my office), but the noise is extremely loud, it is like 1/4 or even 1/3 of voice loudness, from 0 Hz descending to about 500 Hz in spectrum
 
OK Jerry - so then the MP3 is blank. I'll wait till you get home to up load a fresh one.
 
Ok so this is the WAV (just delete the last .mp3 extension). There is some additional noise but this is because my girlfriend turned on TV in anothe room.

Sure your furnace isn't on? If not, that definitely doesn't sound right...

Quite sure, Jimmy;) today I resent the mic to the shop, I hope they will send me another one, because I love the sound (except for that windy shitty something in the background)
 
I have tried everything (including changing room), placing it everywhere. This is constant noise. It is not audible by ears, and other mics (AT3035) not reacting like that.
 
In a few days I should have some response from my dealer, thanks to everyone fro help.

I had exactly the same problem and it was the printed circuit board on the fritz.
(NT55 matched pair)
Luckily my units were still under warranty.

Unfortunately my NT1-a is now exhibting the same problem.....useful as a paper weight and that's about it.
