Hi
wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this.
I've come accross the Rode D-Power plug which is basically an in-line preamp which they are marketing to boost the output of your average dynamic mic. I'm wondering about whether or not this would be perfect to boost the (usually) fairly low output of ribbon mics so you can use them with any bog standard mixer?

Anyone see any problems with this?
cheers

I dunno. You might want to check on the quality of the signal boosting as opposed to a good mic pre. ( I dont know what the signal to noise ratio is on those things).Although Royer is making something like this available on some of their mics(but, its also Royer, and those mics aint cheap), I still think a good, clean pre would be better.....I guess you could try it.

You might want to check out whether the Rode inline pre-amp passes the phantom 48V used to power it up to the mic conected to it before you try it with a ribbon mic. Generally, it's not a good idea to apply phantom voltage to ribbon microphones. If you are using it with a condenser mic no problem, let us know how well it worked out for you.

Nothing in the specs about the passing on of the 48V to the mic. I've dropped Rode a line to see if they can elaborate on this for me. Will keep you posted

I'm waiting for AEA's ribbon mic preamp to come out this spring. Two channels. Tons of gain. And very reasonably priced.

how reasonable do you reckon? I know they did a limited run dual pre-amp in the 80's (I think). Will this one be along the same lines?

Heard back from Rode about the D-Plug. The phantom won't transfer onto the mic so should be okay with the ribbon. Now all I need to do is give it a try.

I would definately stay away from this device on a ribbon... they are too fragile in nature. An Re-20 is one thing, but this is quite another.

get the preamp that is being designed for this purpose... it's supposed to be sub-1000 and have 74db of gain

I'm waiting to try it with some dynamics, hehehehe

Newwer ribbon mics,if the cable is wired properly (pin 1 ground),should be fine. Hot plugging a ribbon mic might stress it out though, but you should ALWAYS turn off your phantom power after youre done (You shouldnt hot plug a condenser either).

Just dont cross pins 2 or 3 with pin 1. Oh yeah, Make sure it doesnt do anything funky like that( it shouldnt though).

If in doubt, contact the manufacturer.
