That is very possible. It's also possible I just got some dud's...
Nope. You don't have duds - they all sound like that. Over the past year or so I've had two pairs of them, one pair matched and the other pair not matched, and they sounded the same.

They are a good design similar to a Schoeps circuit, but use really cheap capacitors in the signal path. Change out the caps (3 total) and they sound great!

Do you favor the Oktava MK012 over the Marshall MXL603S for acoustic guitar? The reason why I'm asking is because I'm getting the idea that the C4 is more like the MXL603S than the Oktava MK012 as far as drak vs bright goes?

Thanks,
Don

Don, I don't own the Marshalls but I just wanted to say that I don't consider the Oktavas to be bright or dark, but fairly neutral. The MK012's have this very nice attack and woody sound that comes across on acoustics. Overall, for acoustic guitar recording where you want that type of sound you cannot go wrong. I think everyone should own at least one.

I wrote a review here (and no I don't sell them):

Low end can crap them out, but other than that I say go for it.

Thanks Warren, I have both the Marshall MXL603S's and Oktava MC-012's... and the MC-012's are a tad darker sounding in comparisons to the MXL603S's.

Thanks for the link... I'll go take a look at your review right now.

Thanks again,
Don

DJL, if you own both mics I guess I'm a tad confused as to why you wanted another opinion on the mics?

Anyhow, yes the Oktava are certainly a tad darker but I still consider them more a natural top end than the hyped high end of most cheap Chinese condensors. Never having used the Marshalls I cannot testify to their sound, other than Harvey likes them which says a lot to me as I trust the man.

The C4's do not have an overly bright top end but they don't have the same bite as the Oktavas on acoustic which I enjoy for most tracks that get laid down around here. The C4's edge out the MK012's on drum overheads though in overall smoothness if you want a comparison of those two (I don't own the C4's...my buddy eBay'd 'em, but lived with a pair for several months until I replaced them on overhead duties with my CAD M179's). The C4's also enjoy a smoother low end than the Oktavas.

I agree. The Oktavas are rather different than the Chinese SDs. I actually prefer the Oktava hypercardiod cap over the cardiod cap for solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar. The hyper cap is rather nice.

One day I plan on picking up the hyper and omni caps, I only have cardioid for now.

Can anyone give a review of the differences in these................Will be using primarily for acoustic guitar,

Thanks

Of the inexpensive Chinese SDs, I prefer the C4 (cardiod cap) over the others for solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar. Perhaps Studio Projects will add a hypercardiod SD cap for the C4 body, based on (and striving for) the Schoeps MK41 capsule. That would be a winner.

Yeah, I only own two of the three (603S, MC-012)... and if I'm not mistaken ozraves owns the 603S, C4, and MC-012 (not many here own all three)... so since ozraves posted above I thought this might be a good time to ask him. But thanks.
