One thing though.........

It seems as if part of your keyboard pattern is out of key.

Your keyboard pattern is 1-1, 2-2. It seems to me, IMHO, that when you don't have the vocal accompaniment running on the track, pattern 2-2 sounds out of key (but, when the vocal stab is ON, the keyboard 2-2 does not sound out of key).

If the mainstream sound is his ticket, then ride it out, for what it is worth. :)
