road cases

I've been looking for a road case for my orange rocker 30 combo and i found a few.. all around 250$


I was wondering.. has anyone here tried to built a case themselves? I'm sure i can build something for far less than $250... maybe even buy some orange tolex to go with the amp mwhahaha okay so i might be a little obsessed with orange at the moment...


but anyways back on topic.. has anyone ever build their own case?

what did you use as materials?? how did it work out?

A friend of mine built a road case for his old Yammy DX-7 out of 3/4" plywood. It protected the instrument very well, but it was so heavy you couldn't tell by lifting it whether the keyboard was in it or not. He painted it black. We called it "the monolith". ;^)

I've seen a few plans for flight cases and such and they are all based on, yes you guessed it, plywood. The choice seems to half inch stuff. Most of the edgings and fittings seem to be for half inch as well. You maybe able to find some for other thickness sheet material. I looked into building a flight case for my mixer and power amp. By the time I costed it out it was just as cheap to buy. Most of the lighter weight stuff seems to be of molded impact plastic.

Here's an old bookmark from a forum I browsed from when I was researching the possibility. Not entirely relevant to you but you'll get the sentiment involved. In the end I bought one. The effort of aluminum and riveting etc to reduce weight just seemed too much to me.

you definitely want to go as lightweight as possible. my last band had a gig up north and we had to be flown in. the airlines charge cargo by weight so the plywood cases my lead singer built to cart the equipment must have been rather expensive cause they were so heavy. but we weren't paying the travel bill so it didn't matter to us.

If you want actual ATA flight style cases, that's going to get expensive trying to make it yourself. If you just want some plywood covered in a felt type covering, you might be alright doing it yourself.

Me, personally, I have cases for my cab and my rack/head. The one for my cab is 1/4" ply with another 1/4" of ABS...aluminum extrusions, all that. For my rack/head case, it's 1/2" ply and I THINK 1/4" ABS, aluminum extrusions (heavy gauge, too), etc. Could be 1/2" ABS. I just know it's heavy as a mofo. Got the rack/head case on eBay from some guy that had been in a touring band. It's in damn good condition. Some scuffs but nothing else. Good price, too.

The other guitarist in my band has a case that fits his rack, head, and 4x12 cab all in one. That thing is one huge and heavy mother fooker.

I don't want to have to worry about my gear getting banged up. And in the cases I have, I can roll them off of hills and out of moving trucks and it won't hurt the gear. If a semi hit it when it rolled out of the truck, then it might be a problem. But it would put plenty of damage to the semi in the process.

wow, that seems crazy why not just have them in seperate boxes?

I'd look on e-bay for used cases. Know what you are buying though. There is some cheap (as in poorly made) stuff out there. If you have a Music-Go-Round near you, they often have used cases as well. Can be much cheaper than buying new (even discounted) and way easier than building.
