Metal dude
I got my RNC the other day, but noticed a few things and i am not sure if it is normal.(1) The -0 db reduction light is allways on--is it supposed to by allways on? , even if no cables are connected?
(2) i really have to send a extreme amount of output from my tapeouts to the RNC and i have to crank the thresold way to the left to get some reduction going on. I have never had this problem w/ my 2 other comps. And it seems to have a bit of self noise also.
Is this shit normal or do i have a bad RNC?????

The '0' light is normal, the rest sure doesn't seem right. Sure you got your in-ies' and out-ies' right?:) I had one that sometimes had an inconsistent threshold start point, but it only showed up at very fast settings.

Are your tape outs +4 or -10? It seems to me that you're sending too weak a signal. I use my RNC with +4 equipment and levels seem just fine, which suggests that that's the level it expects.

search sux

I spent about 12 min w/ the search function and found a thread that stated that the RNC is neither -10 or +4 it is 0db. So all my stuff is -10 thats proberly why i have to send alot of input into the unit and set a -20 threshold just to get -6db reduction.
Well im bumed.......

Actually, the gain structure the RNC is optimized for is 0 dBu... this is so that it interfaces more easily with gear at either -10 dBV and +4 dBu.....

Yeah, I've noticed having set a VERY low threshold only to get about a max. of 6dB reduction too sometimes! This is with +4 nomial levels too! Only seems to happen on occation though. I always just figured it had to do with the setting and never thought about there being something wrong with it. Yep, 0 led is always on though. That's most definitely normal.

There may be some issues with my mathematics but if your sending a signal in at -10 (RNC ready for 0) and then you would have to set the threshold to -10 before it would be able to hit the signal. If your signal is around -10db (fairly normal for 24bit) than you would have to turn the threshold down to -20db before you would hit the signal.

I realize we're talking about 2 different types of db scales but you've described sounds about the same as has been my experience when dealing with -10, +4 issues.

If you happen to have a clean preamp handy it might work well for boosting that signal a bit before it hits the RNC or better yet get a mixer that uses +4 levels.

i bought a rnc and sent it back cause it was all or nothing with the threshold. as soon as i would turn it a little it would smash the signal to the max. it was either full on or full off. nothing less.
mabyee i just had a bad unit.
