Hi all, first post! Glad to be here. I just purchased a RNC Compressor due to so many good reviews ($175.00 on eBay, shipped!). I noticed that is doesn't have XLR inputs. How do I handle phantom power for my recording mic?! What do I need to buy to make sure it works?

Also, do you recommend daisey-chaining the RNC to get a more even sound so the one compressor doesn't have to work so hard?

Thanks!

Sounds like you're trying to crack the code to life with that thing....

I think you're making it more complex than it has to be. If you're talking about phantom power, then you're talking about a condensor mic. They require external power. You'd just have to route your mic into a phantom power box before it hits the board.

Compressors run in the line of signal flow. All that means is, they aren't designed with XLR inputs because you don't route a mic directly into one. You usually patch one in through your inserts to have any desired effect.

You shouldn't have to daisy chain to prevent overload, it's just a matter of setting your levels.

Ok I should have said "I am a nOOb to recording!"

What are my options for external power to the mic?
I can't go directly to the compressor? So what do I do, record the vocals, THEN run them through the compressor on to another track?!

I have an AW16G which I am still learning to use and I am writing mostly acoustic songs. Believe it or not, my flying V with EMG 60 and boss chorus pedal sounds GREAT :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In short, you need a preamp, not a compressor.

Compressors come after the preamp.

What's an inexpensive but decent option?

The RNP is nice, but 4-500.

I hear the M-audio dmp-3 is good as well - $150.

Both are two channels.

For a single channel the GT Brick is supposed to be awesome - $400

fortunately, your AW16G does supply phantom power on Mic1 and 2. Refer to your manual on how to use them. Be careful when using phantom power like don't plug/unplug mic during phantom power ON.

You can use the compressor as an INSERT on your AW16G, refer to your manual for that too....

Hmmm, ok.

I will look that up in the manual. I appreciate the help. I might just buy a used pre-amp for now to make it easier.
