TURN DOWN THOSE MONITORS AND QUIT THAT ROCK BAND OR ELSE WEAR EARPLUGS!! Pete Townsend would vouch for that.

Daltrey too. If you ever saw that TV clip with them on the Smothers Brothers show where Moon's drums exploded, take a look at Roger. He said in an interview that he lot a good deal of hearing due to it.

left ear, right ear, unequal

This has been touched on, but maybe someone could elaborate or have suggestions...that is on the subject of ones level of hearing being different in each ear...I seem to hear well (the highs, and no ringing) but when I listen to music on headphones I notice that the center (the vocals especially) seems to be moved toward my left ear...when I am using a player where I can adjust the balance this helps somewhat but I just don't get that sensation of the music being in the middle of my head like I did as a teenager...this has led me to be somewhat mistrustful of my hearing in mixing situations (especially as far as panning) and I try to listen to the room (instead of just the center of the stereo field) to check myself...

I am wondering if others have this problem and how they deal with it...would it be effective to set up ones monitors to "sound" balance to unbalance ears (using reference music) etc.?

But did you know that those whose Military duties (as opposed to Professional duties) is at the Gun Mount on a battleship are not allowed to wear ear plugs? They said it is crucial that they hear everything going on inside. This is what they told me when USS NEW JERSEY was inport here last 1986. Don't know how accurate that was. Poor guy's huh?

I always wondered about situations in the services. I would hope that ear protection would have become more of a standard practice these days.
I remember my first introduction to instant ear-ring at about 10 with a 45ACP. (Well supervised but before anyone knew about ear safety.) I can't even fathom the effect of larger and even much higher-pressure weapons must have.

yes! I ALWAYS have that left/right ear hearing stuff. I tried to mix once when I had a cold, and I listened a week later - it was terrible...haha. ESPECIALLY the panning. It was WAY over to the right!!

Anyway, I always tihnk stuff is louder in my left ear too...really drives me crazy...i try to compensate for it, and just give other people a chance to listen too to see if i'm crazy or not..

and VU - I hope I dont have a serious hearing condition...I'm only 18 - HA! But hey, i'm still takin the precautions.

hearing loss is no joke. Snare drums are fucking loud. I never allow drummers to have sticks in their hands until after i'm done micing the set. Those motherfuckers will crack a snare while your head is right next to it. fucking drummers. Once you have permanent ringing you are basically fucked unless its a medical condition. I actually had a friend who went deaf in one ear after a night of heavy drinking. Another friend went deaf in one ear from a really loud PA sqeal. Get earplugs. You can have them specifically designed to fit your individual ears and will cost you a little over a hundred bucks. Also they are designed for audio folks in that they attentenuate the entire frequency spectrum evenly, i.e. they don't just make things sound "duller" like those cheesy yellow onces you get for $2. They also are pretty hard to see (they fit in your ears tightly and don't stick out and are flesh colored.) Get 'em! They have the nubs seal of approval.

Please direct me to more info on these earplugs... Thanks

This is exactly why I recently stopped doing live sound in extremely loud bars. It's not worth it.

Slept with earplugs for the first time last night.. very interesting.. actually kinda disorienting.....

I didn't expect to hear ringing, but I did... It went away about 15 minutes after having them in...

Cool stuff.. I just hope we don't have a fire or something... I'm gonna start wearing these at work (where there are thousands of computer fans spinning simultaneously)...

Thanks

I don't hear ringing but those damn voices are enough to make you go nuts! :D

Actually, I lost my hearing in the left side years ago. People say that my mixes are often unbalanced and lack bass. I say stick a finger in your left ear...see it sounds fine :D

smoking:
deffinately effects my ring, that's why i quit.

allergies:
when my allergies flare up, so does my ring (this is a bigger one than you may think).
coffee:
f' you, i'm not quitting everything.

and p.s.

the i pod generation is screwed, wait and see.

i'm from the cd-r generation.. I'm fine.. lol

These work incredibly well for the money. I barely notice any difference in sound quality. They are perfect for rehearsals and live shows, either performing or attending. I don't know that I would trust them for critical listening, but you shouldn't be doing serious work that loud anyway. I do use them setting up mics around guitar amps and drums, with a really loud pair of isolation-type cans over them. The weak point is the headphones, because they are not really accurate, but I have improved results with this technique.

Is this what I have to look forward too in my mixing audio career?!?!

Uh, when you have Tinnitus, there is no audio carreer :)

About 15 years ago I was blasting off my brand new 44 magnum (6 in.) w/o ear protection, left the range in a sort of shell shock state - dizzy, ears ringing real bad. They haven't stopped ringing. I now have significant loss in the right ear. Your ringing probably won't stop either, you'll get kinda used to it. But like the others have said, go get a hearing test & see a doctor. Protect those freaking ears!

ha, cool to see this thread pop back up...

since when I posted this a couple years back, my ringing has cut down a ton...but I also have started wearing ear plugs/etc...

anyway, that's a good thing. ha.

Wow amazing thread for me to read. Im 22 and have had serious tinnitus for over 6 years. My life is music, tinnitus has fucked with me for so long i normally avoid music concerts and jamming cause of it. Thing is i live for this shit... ahh i dont want to talk about it.

tinnitus is fucked. I hope there will be a cure someday i really fucking do. Fuck all this money on cancer research. We need tinnitus cure now :(

Well, I understand how you're feeling... Over thirty years playing in loud bands, most of that without earplugs, has given me my personal non-stop ring-tones as well.

But my wife has stage four incurable colon cancer which has spread to her liver, and given a choice, I think I'd rather she had tinnitus.

Damn. :(

My condolences to you and your wife, littledog. :(

What a bummer of a thread- but a damn good reminder. Glad to hear your rings got better, Shack. I wore earplugs for a while after an audiologist suggested I do so- just for good measure. I think I'll see about getting the full spectrum ear plugs...
