Oh man, oh man. haha.

So does anyone here lay in bed at night, where it's completely silent, and your ears are RINGING. I mean, just a constant Really really high pitched beep. Sounds like it's coming from a TV or something, almost.

And actually, they are always doing it if you just listen. It's lke inside my head!@! haha.

Also, if it's really quiet and pay attention, it sounds like a MILLION ringing sounds, and they sound so high freaquency and just so OUT THERE. haha. i can't even describe it, but it keeps me away at night it gets so loud! I can't tone it out because it's all i think about at night! haha.

Is this what I have to look forward too in my mixing audio career?!?!

Yeah, you may want to look into getting a pair of quality fitted earplugs.

Shackrock,

Blue Bear is 100% correct. He hit the problem on the head. You should take heed . What you are experiencing is serious. You must consult a physician or audiologist for your problem. Hopefully, the problem is just temporary and if not, let's hope it is only high frequency loss and not severe. Can't mix with a high frequency loss, can we?

With a hobby like ours, it is more than likely just hearing loss, and not neuroligical, infectious, etc.

You see, we should not really expose ourselves to loud sounds exceeding 85db for extended periods as permanent hearing loss occurs when that happens. More dangerous is using headphones at full volume. As a guide, a lawnmower generates 110 db.

I've been having probs with that too for the past couple weeks. I'm almost thinking that maybe my stomach acid medication (prevacid) is causing it. I've read certain meds can cause tenitus like symptoms... If I'm recoding/mixing for a long time I've always been careful not to listen to things very loud so I've been kinda stumped why my ears are ringing all of a sudden. I haven't been anywhere loud and I listen to talk radio in my car... The only thing I could think of is it seems like it started happening about the time I started taking prevacid.
It also seems worse when I'm in my office surrounded by computers. Alot of other times I don't notice it unless something makes me think about it. Don't think anyhting is wrong with my hearing other than that but it is kinda spooky cause you wonder if it's gonna go away...

Play it safe, go to a doctor.

Ringing ears more often than not is caused by hearing loss. The first ones to go is the high frequency spectrum. We couldn't be a recording engineer with bad ears, could we? Regardless of how good our skills and equipment are.

One more thing about hearing loss - they don't get better and if you happen to have the permanent type (those that you don't get back after a few minutes), it's with you forever.

If you are over 40, you probably have some hearing loss. That is when it starts to be noticeable.

There was a time that my ears started ringing similar to what you are describing and my doctor told me that it was possibly a vitamin B12 deficiency. So we picked up some vitamin B12 drops that I put under my tongue each day and after a couple of weeks it was gone.

Then I went for a while without taking the B12 and it came back again, so I went right back to the drops. It worked for me, hope it works for you.

Tinnitus can be caused by a multitude of different reasons. Loud sounds is the most common one, B12 deficiency one rather unusual one, and tension is also a common one. I have that problem, if I get tens I start to clench my teeth. If I do that for a couple of weeks, I get tinnitus. It's especially noticeable if I lie down to read, since that position (resting on my elbows) makes the tension worse.

I have a tiny bit of permanent tinnitus too, but that I can only hear when it's very quiet. It's like a bunch of extremely tiny tinkerbells. :) The tension tinnitus is more of a single droning note though.

I remember my ears ringing a lot back when I was playing in a band. I'm much more careful now and luckily it wasn't permanent. Change whatever is causing it NOW before it's too late. Pete Townsend can't even play live anymore because of it.

too late for me unless i spend 7 years in tibet

i've been dealing with high volume stuff since i was 16 and found the joys of a discman and rechargeable batteries. i have the same ring.....heres a tip....leave your comp on in your room and turn off the monitor...the comp fan is audible and takes the focus off the high pitch ring...the ring goes away if i focus on another sound

holy crap... this sucks, i'm going to take some b12, can i get it at krogers?? ha

i think mine is mainly due to repetitive nature....i bet if i stopped listening to loud music then it might possibly go away......but i like the music too much to stop

eerie, I am having this too.

Thanks for the B12 advice. I will try that. I don't know why it's started recently except for maybe all the listening I've done on recordings and such.

I guess I should get a db meter eh? I don't listen to anything "LOUD" as much as I can. When I think I have a mix right, then I kick it up one time to see if it holds up "loud", and if it doesn't, I make notes and re-mix it with it quieter. But I don't listen LOUD for very long at all.

Odd indeed.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. You will go fucking half deaf and won't be able to enjoy music for the rest of your life if you keep that up.

well after the drugs drinking and smoking i guess i might not live long enough to deal with being "fucking half deaf " LOL

ha...

for real though you guys....sometimes this is really loud. haha.

Is there something else I can do? or if it's done, it's done and it's too late? haha.

i mean fort the past 1.5 years i wear earplugs non stop at any show or band practice.
i work at a cemetary cutting grass w/ a weed whacker, earplugs there too.
but before then, i never wore earl\plugs to anything basically.

hmmm..

arghhhhh!

I have severe tinnitus in my left ear from years of being on stage with no hearing protection next to marshall plexis w/ greenbacks turned up to 7. Please, protect your ears.

No you don't. Nobody likes music that loud unless they are insane. Get earplugd, and you will be able to listen to the loud music at loud, but non-painful lvels, and you still get kicked in the chest by the bass.j

The only thing we could do at this stage is to keep the hearing we have now. But make sure you do not have any infection. See a physician to ensure the ringing is not any serious.

Remember, ear plugs lower the volume by only 3 db! That is not bad actually, because technically sound doubles or halves by every 3db although our perception of it doubles or halves at 5db.

So if the noise is at 110 db, you wear an ear plug - the sound will be 107 db. You would still be way off from the maximum allowable that won't create damage of 85db. That is why sailors (not the soldiers) wear a closed cup ear muff/cover over their already ear plugged ears. The ear cup lowers the sound by 5db.

Knowledge is our tool and see an audiologist now!

(Do I sound like an advertisement? )

Whatever. We all partied like rock stars in our twenties. Next thing you know you'll be 30. Might as well be 30 with some hearing left.
