I got this old Amperite ribbon mic off Ebay. Didnt even expect it to work, but it does. It has a high pitched rattle so I have been inside of it. I made sure everything was nice and tight, but I noticed the ribbon material, literally can be blown around inside. The ribbon material is not original (which is probably good) I can see how to tighten it, but Im no expert and this stuff is quite thin, so I dont want to tear it. Is it supposed to be this loose?

Thanks

Heya,

A Google groups search has lead me to believe that it is a tension issue. I can try to tighten it up and if I mess up Im no worst off. It will just have to be sebt to Enak. It sounds great except for the rattle.

What model do you have? Depending on that it might have a tension tightening screw or not.

How lose is the ribbon? If you put the mic horizontally does the ribbon sug or stays flat? If last then it should be OK.
The high pitched rattle problem is usually because of whether some small particles got into magnet gap and touch the ribbon, or the ribbon got off center and is rubbing against pole pieces. In some cases (when ribbon is sugging) the last can be helped with tightening a tension screw, otherwise, it should be re-ribboned.
