Hey all - my home setup has an SPX 90, a Rev 5, Roland SRV-2000, and a Lexicon Alex. All GREAT boxes for the money.

However, my Rev 5 has finally bit the dust (distorted output when the effects are engaged, and I'll bet it's some kind of hard-to-find DSP chip)... So I guess my question is, what does everybody think a good replacement would be, for a Rev 5? A modern-day unit, assuming I don't find a Rev 5 replacement. I mean, something that actually SOUNDS like a Rev 5, do any of the newer Yamaha verbs have a similar sound?

Or, does anybody out there know anything about Yamaha repair?

Thanks, All!

You might want to try taking it to a repair shop. It could be cheap to fix, at least worth finding out.

I just sold my REV5! I did a lot of listening tests with it, and one of the closest sounding reverbs is the TC M3000, as far as flavor. I would almost say the M3000 sounds like a very cleaned up version of the REV5. They are similar in a lot of ways, I'm sure TC spent some time studying the REV5. The reverb tails on the M3000 are of course much smoother, the REV5 has that early digital 16bit grain/grunge on the tails.

So I guess I'd suggest an M3000 as a very nice alternative unit. However, a low cost reverb that sounds excellent is the Kurzweil Rumour. I have one and it's very very good, especially for the price. It would be a nice addition to your fx collection, as you seem to have only older units. The Rumour is also incredibly easy to use, but has plenty of editable parameters.

Well, the M3000 is not gritty by any means. Smooth and clean would be two words I'd use to describe it. Don't overlook the Kurzweil box either, it's really good, and amazing at the price. If you want more info, I wrote a review of the Kurzweil fx boxes here:

There's a lot to choose from in reverb boxes, especially if you are interested in older units. Tons of stuff from Roland, Boss, Alesis, Yamaha and others. There are also some interesting units from Korg you should take a look at. You might have some interest in the Korg A2 for example.
