I'm telling you that!! cause it's the truth. And I don't get bored editing, as a matter of fact ,that is where the fun begins. If you haven't used a vf08 then you don't know what you're talking about!

VF / 'puter

Hey dtb -

I have a VF160, & I like it a lot - but let me tackle a point you brushed on earlier.

As well as the Fostex, I also use my computer for digital recording & editing, and fwiw I find the editing a fair bit easier & more relaxing using the 'puter. If you have a good machine already, you probly have significantly more DSP power than the VF - and with even the best standalone multitracker (heh.. Fostex of course!) you're very limited by the display size ("a bit like painting your hallway thru the letterbox" as someone once said).

If I had the gear you have already, I would be looking at an 8 analog<->ADAT converter for yr Terratec, and then Cubase, Cakewalk or whatever.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing my VF, & I'm pretty sure if you buy one you won't be disappointed - but it just seems to me that you could get a system you could edit via a monitor rather than a LCD display, for a fraction of the price - you got the hardware already. (Of course the crucial advantage of the VF is portability - & almost-uncrashability - that's why I bought mine...)

One point to consider if you do go for a VF160 - some dealers now seem to be getting all their product shipped in with the internal CD/RW as standard.
If you already have a standalone CD recorder, you might want to specify no internal CD/RW - that should knock a couple of hundred dollars off the price...

Good luck -

VF-16

Hey DTB, I bought the VF-16 when they first came out and I have been succussfully recording on it ever since. Does it have limitations? Sure, since purchasing it has changed it's role as my recording and mixing machine to my digital tracking machine. I record all the tracks on my VF-16 and then dump them to my PC for mixing. The VF-16 well let you record 16 tracks and 8 virtual tracks, but you can dump all 24 tracks to your PC! So, you in effect have 24 track recorder, if you mix on your PC. Using it in this way I bybass some of the EQ / Compression limitations the machine has. Here is a link to recordings I have done on the VF-16 and mixed PC.

dumping tracks?

How do you dump the tracks so they are in sync. I have a fd8 and having problems syncing 1-8, 9-16, and 17-24.

Dumping in Sync Tracks

I use a simple SCSI Zip 100 drive. The VF-16 lets me save all the raw tracks a standard .wav files. So I don't even have to worry about the tracks sync'ing up. It is inexpensive, quick, stable and simple. The only thing you have to remember during track is make sure you 'mark' all 24 tracks at the same point. Example you recording your drum, bass guitar, and rythmn guitar tracks. You start recording them at al the exact point. Okay you now want to add your killer guitar solo. So you start recording at 1:30 minutes into the song on track 9. Now you export your tracks to your PC and low and behold track 9 is out of sync! Why? Because the .wav file starts at the moment you punched in the guitar track at 1:30 and not a 0:00 like the others did.! If you 'mark' your track at the beginning, which is simply recording a moment of silence at the very beginning, your .wav file starts at the same point the other tracks do. Make sense? This way you can punch in and punch out all day long on that track and it will be in perfect sync with the other tracks.

Cheers,
Daniel

Limitations?

Daniel,
Can you please mention some of the "limitations" you spoke of regarding the compressor of the VF-16? Also, I have the fostex FD-8, using a ZIP drive for memory. I like that because I can record 2-3 songs, take the disc out, and pop in a new one- ready for more songs. Do you know if I can use the same drive for the VF-16?
Thanks, tiatan

The easiest option is to sync your PC to the FD8 via MIDI. Works like a champ and you don't have to manually line up your tracks in your editor. 3 passes and you're done. What program are you using?

Zip Drive

Yes, I use a SCSI ZIP 100 drive for transferring .wav files to my PC. They are also in perfect sync. This is much quicker than playing back your song 2-3 times for each of the 8 tracks you have recorded. Hope this helps.
