replacing the pinch roller for a 424

The only way I know of,...

is through total disassembly of the unit.

First, you'd split the top & bottom halves of the unit apart.

Then, it depends on what orientation of the cassette mech is presented by splitting the case, but let's assume the cassette mech is still in a face-down orientation.

You'd then unmount the cassette mech from the chassis/mounting plate, and turn it over to expose the pinchweel assembly.

At that point, it's fairly easy to release a spring, remove a C-clip, and replace the pinchwheel assy, complete with rubber tire & armature.

Reassemble in reverse order.

It's a lot of disassembly, screws and wires, but it's not rocket science, & sorry,... I don't think it can be done just from the front.

that is alot of dissembling..

but what are my chances of messing it up? i mean... is it all pretty simple? and just alot of screws to take off?

Well,...

It's a fair amount of disassembly, plus, you may have to disconnect a few wires before the cassette mech will readily swing into an orientation that you can get to the pinchwheel. It's a lot of screws, it's fairly technical, but if you're careful to put everything back where it goes, you'll be okay.

It depends on the 424, whether the cassette mech is in a face-up or face-down position, when you remove the outer covers,... or split the case. Once you get the two halves of the 424 apart, then you'll have a better view of the cassette mech, and what's required to get to the pinchwheel.

The 244 & 234 require dismounting the cassette mech to flip it over, but on the 488mkII the cassette mech is in a face-up orientation when the two halves of the cover are split. I recently opened up a 424mkII, but I can't remember what orientation the cassette mech was in,... up, I think.

Good luck.;)
