Hey guys. I jut got a free half stack from my brother (not to mention two great free guitars) and I set up the half stack and started playing... AND.... It was sad because it sounded great at first (playing a riff) then I moved my way backward up the fretboard and found low notes created a crackly sound in one of the 4 speakers. I can open it up and check out the inside but before I do, does anyone have any ideas of what the problem could be (a couple scenarios) and possible costs of repairs? Best case to worst case scenarios (although worst case I already know) the head is fine its just the cabinet and the top right speaker (maybe the top left a little two but the top right is over powering on crunchy sound)

If crackle is coming from only one speaker, it;s 99% likely the problem is with that one speaker. Even if it's a stereo amp, only one speaker would not be making noise if the problem was with the amp.

I get that. With any luck it will just be a wiring issue and need to be resoldered

might want to also check to be sure all 4 speakers are good and tight..a slightly loose speaker, may only rear an ugly sound when certain frequencies are sent through it..

but then, you did say crackle and not "buzz"..but still worth checking out I guess..

Thanks good point. Will do

Crackle probably means a split in the speaker cone itself. Remember the old days whn you could get a cheap (under $40) 12" or 15" speaker from Lafayette Electronics (they were bigger than Radio Shack) until you could afford a decent replacement?

lol, yeah no doubt...and of course there was always the nylons/glue method for a fix..something like that..been soo long i can`t remember..LOL

Nylons? Really? I use (not kidding) paper towels and Elmer's glue.

I would probably just unplug that speaker.

that would probably screw it up and mess up the ohms or some crap... but that wouldn't stop me - no sir
