The not fountain head
I'm thinking that the A is the place to be for hip hop production... Is that the center of it all these days?

I've also heard that Nashville is on the up and up...

This isn't supposed to be a real serious thread... I'm just casually trying to plan my hoping-to-be-professional future.....

Thanks....

P.S. If anyone has ever relocated for these reasons... Feel free to post your experience and how many connections to the city you had before making the switch...

It isn't yet but I think my hometown (DC) is gon be on the come-up soon. We've produced stars (like John Legend and Amerie) and VA has as well (Timbaland, for example.)

Ya know.. I was just thinking that recently.. You really got something going out that way!

by the end of this year i should be moving back to Miami. If anything I can get bussiness from all the people who "rap" by making them demos. Suffice to say that quite a few rappers have come out of Miami. PITBULL more specifically comes to mind. And you can kinda count Vanilla Ice. But there is a lot of up and coming talent in MIA as well as a lot of ppl who think they got talent. I only kno that if they got the money for my services, we're in business.

Any decent sized city will have a big hip-hop scene.
I would never move just for potential connects etc...
BUT, If I were going to move, I wouldnt go to ATL, Houston, NY, LA etc...
All those big cities have a million and one producers already.
There would be too much competition.
I would move to a smaller un-tapped city, like say, Denver Colarado, Milwaukee WI, Rhode Island (might aswell call it a city), etc...
Tons of emcees, not a lot of serious producers.

Sounds like a plan... Good luck and keep us in the know....

Good point(s)... I'd like to break into my local scene... Not quite sure where to begin though... I thought about commuting to Cincinnati (bout an hour away) for some Hip Hop culture (home to Hi-Tek, among others)... Same problem... I'm kinda like a one man crew...

im a one man crew also. I love my cities hiphop scene. Its big enough to not get boring, but small enough to meet other emcees/producers at shows.

I use to sit around and try to figure out how to break into my cities scene too. Then I discovered the secret to doing it...

You dont. You don't "Break" into the scene, because your already there. Go to local shows, talk to the emcess, talk to the producers. eventually you'll get to know them. Theres no secret password, just start making music and playing it for people. call the local venues, and ask to play a show.
Call the other emcees/producers and ask if they know of some upcomming shows ou can do etc...

Basically, act like youre already part of the scene, because if you really think about it, you are.

That's an awesome post!! rep +1

Thanks man....

Other than NY or LA, no place gets more people, both industry and non industry, commercial and underground, coming looking for music than Tha A. There so many venues down here to make connects, too. But, like Ethos said there are a lot of production companies here, but on the realz, half of them have sub par talent, which makes it pretty easy for me to place tracks here. But producers have to step their game up to place tracks down here. Also, as you probably know, songs that blow up locally here get the national spotlight.

DC is my hometown too, but John Legend isn't from there. Here's from Ohio....But can claim Marvin Gaye, Ginuwine, DJ Kool, Mya, producers Rich Harrison (Crazy in Love, Solider, One thing) and Chucky Thompson (Who Shot Ya, most of Mary's best album My Life)...We can't really claim VA Beach though.

the A and Houston is hot right now...I would say DC but most of the artist here in DC outsource for their tracks..

the A will always be hot..but like everyones is sayin you gotta be on point and have a sonund that fits whatever artist you produce for..

I said John Legend by mistake, I meant Tre Songz (as a VA, not DC, artist.)

Good stuff people.. Thanks.. I'm all about development on a daily basis...

I think Ethos had the best answer. You need to establish yourself on your local scene first and foremost. I'd say print up some flyers, like the same ones they do for parties/clubs, find where the local hip hop spots, like places you can buy hip hop clothing, get hip hop music, where local rapper perform and just pass them out. It's a great way to meet people, and show them that your on your grind.
