I just reformatted the hard drive for, only the second time, on my VF-160, using the "standard method", and after completion the results showed 2 MB in "Bad" sector column, and says hit the yes or no key. What key are you suppose to hit to correct the bad sectors, or do you have to live with the bad sectors. Manual says to hit no or stop to escape from the set up mode. Do I press yes to correct bad sectors?

If you hit yes, then I would think the worst that can happen is the reformatting process starts again. Curious. Why have you had to reformat? This is pretty unusual.

Well, I hit yes, and it just went to where you would have been if you hit no......I guess.....and that is the same place you would be the first time you ever turned on a new unit.......the reason I formatted was because I had a lot of stuff I didn't need as I was learning the operations of the unit, and I burned a cd of everything I wanted to keep, and well,......I didn't realize it was so unusual to do this!.....I learned from another forum that it is not unusual to have bad sectors on a NEW unit......supposedly, it "maps" where they are, so their not used....it doesn't remove them.....hasn't anybody else reformatted their hard drive???....

I'm not saying reformatting is a bad thing, and yes, some bad sectors are often a normal occurence. But usually people reformat drives when there's been some glitches popping up. When my machine fills up with stuff I just delete programs. The Fostex machines use the FDMS-3 system that optimizes the drive as you record, for better performance. This lessens the likelihood that reformating would become a necessity. Even so, I don't know of any reason why reformatting for its own sake would be bad. Sorry if I implied the wrong thing.

The "bad" sectors are a normal occurence.I just formatted a Brand New 20 gig drive that I installed in my VF 16 and it found 8 Megabytes of bad sectors.Pressing "exit/No" is the correct way to finish a format on the VF.How many gigs is your hardrive? It took 3 hours to format my my 20 gig drive!

billisa: I didn't think you implied anything......I'm new at this and didn't want to do anything to unknowingly damage my unit. This is my second unit. I bought both units from Musicians Supply as "B" stock, otherwise known as "scratch and dent." The first one didn't even come in the original box, and came with a well worn manual with yellow highlighting all through it. It had several different recorded programs, you could tell, by several different owners. The problem was that when I turned on the unit for the very first time, just to see it display, the led light of the first channel came on and STAYED on. I called Fostex and they told me I needed to return it to Musician's Supply because the channel was fried. Musicians Supply claims they throughly check out their "scratch and dent" items, but I can tell ya from experience they don't! So I returned it, and got another one from them, but this time I got one that came in the original box with all extra paper work and fresh looking manual and a few recorded programs by one previous owner. So I reformatted it then to remove them and get a fresh start. No bad sectors showed at that time. It took about four hours to reformat.

Kramer: It's a 20 giger like yours (maxtor) and it took about six hours this time, with the two MB of bad sectors.
