Reference amplifier

How important is a "reference" amplifier to monitoring? I mean, I understand that they produce a cleaner signal, but what types of things do you look for? What are some of the specs I can keep an eye out for regarding budet amps for monitoring?
I know people like Haflers, Samson Servo, but what makes these different?

[Downside Studio]

I own one custombuild 'studio' amplifier. No I don't know anything technical about the inside, except that all the stuff is the best of the best, and build for optimal performance. I paid a lot for it, but only after hearing the diference between this amp and a normal studio-amp.
