Does anyone have the solution to the following problem that I'm having with my reel to reel system. It is a Sanyo MR-929 model. The problem is that when I place the handle into the "play" position it will "run" in fast forward. Any suggestions?

Is there any sound (like the tape is running at twice the normal speed) or is it simply fast forwarding?

Fast forwarding - very little sound.

Good thing you posted in Newbies first, otherwise I would have missed it. I long ago moved to digital.

The fact that you say little sound indicate you might have a big problem in the mechanical linkage between the control handle and the the multiple thing is controls. But just in case not, check a couple things. Be sure the tape is threaded properly between the capstan and rubber tension wheel that pinches the tape up against the rotating capstan during play and record operation. If that is OK and the wheel looks OK, check to see that the capstan is turning, and that the rubber wheel moves down to pinch the tape against it in play mode. Even if the capstan is turning and the wheel is OK, I have seen instances where the tension between the wheel and the capstan are is not sufficient and the take up reel pulls the tape through at high speed. In that case it might be either the surface of the wheel has become glazed from sitting unused, or a problem (maybe just dust or a screwed up spring) in the linkage that moves the sheel against the capstan.

If you are hearing sound from the tape, the mechanical portion (in regards to engaging initial playback) seems to work. I would suspect a capstan and/or pinch roller...............but I can't see the take up motor having that much torque on it when in play mode. From my experience anyway, when the pinch roller becomes hardened (glazed), it usually results in too much slack on the supply side of the deck and the tensioner swings to it's resting position, usually shutting off playback.

I would say idler wheels could be at fault, but those would cause slippage internally and slower than normal playback.

I would have to go with the switch and/or linkage first. If that's not the culprit, the circuits for the ffwd/play might be at fault. I'm not familiar with Sanyo so I couldn't give you much more help.
