I played the first and agreed the kick was very overpowering. New kick is great. Bass is a little boomy. Did you HPF the bass ? All in all a great tune. My kind of stuff !!!!!! Joey, once I get my FM radio tower up, your going to be on rotation !!!!!

The new mix sounds much better. I agree with Bushmaster the bass is slightly boomy. Other than that it sounds really good.

Hey Mike!
No, didn't HP the bass, I'll check it out.
Make sure that tower has wind-protection...:D
Thanx for the comments!

I listened to both versions back to back and they both immediately felt a bit plasticky to me, though I did prefer the remix. I think it may be down to the stale tone of the rhythm guitar and the drum programming (I've done the latter before and I know it's extremely difficult to get it to sound right, I'm just saying). Having read the others' comments while waiting for the song to download, I came to expect more from the vocals in terms of energy, if feels as if you're holding back somehow (it's still very well sung though), or as if the music and the vocals took turns holding each other back, especially in the chorus - there is a lot of tension in the song that just doesn't get resolved. The solo was the highlight of the song for me though for my tastes, it could use a bit more groove and fewer notes, I definitely liked the sustained squealy bit in the beginning the best and I'd work from that. This brings me back to the issue of the vocals, however - there is a very unfortunate contrast, clashing even, in the respective moods of the solo and the vocals. So I guess the bottom line is that the song just doesn't work for me on a number of levels, but I'm happy to see that I'm in minority here.

To each his own, my friend. Thanx.

Joey - new mix.
I wouldn't say the bass was boomy - it maybe a little louder in the mix now it's not partially masked by the bass drum. It's a great full bass sound with plenty of definition. As a bassist I like plenty of bass & to know my fav. instrument is THERE!
I am listening on headphones & that may mean some difference is response.
As to the comment that there's no resolution to the tension in the song - I'd have to offer that there's no resolution or redemption offered.
I'll have to listen to some of the work by that chap to see if he's speaking from the heart or through his hat.
Hmm, did - Early 80's electronic pop - sparse yet almost Amiga.

I didn't mean there's no resolution in terms of the narrative or the dramatic arc, but in terms of the music, specifically the arrangement. And when I write a critique, I'm speaking purely as a listener, a consumer of music if you want, and I say what I like and what I don't like, and offer advice if I think can - I don't feel my opinions need any validation in the shape of my own output. However, I'll gladly offer one of my recent songs up for review - I think I'll start a new thread though, it wouldn't be fair to Joey for me to distract from his song in his thread.

It's OK, Ray, I guess in a supposedly democratic world, everyone's entitled to an opinion.;) The important thing is that I'm happy with the song, tension or not. Song is what it is, I am what I am. And if a listener doesn't percieve any tension building up to a final deafening scream, crazy drum rolls and aggressive guitar chords, well, that's not my problem....

I'm sorry, but I didn't really feel that:
a. the final scream was particularly deafening,
b. the drum rolls were particularly crazy, or
c. the guitar chords were particularly aggressive. It may be that I'm a fan of death metal and used to really heavy stuff but your song is rather tame by most any standards, simply due to the way it comes together. You can have the heaviest chords and still fail to deliver the energy as far as I'm concerned, it's in the way you do it and your way just doesn't click with me.

Than so be it.

Ray is right about the bass being more pronounced, now that the kick is cut back. One the first track I didnt really notice the bass being boomy because of the kick. And all I had to do was cut back my sub level. Its a preference thing. And Im always messing with my sub level.

I thought the vocals were awesome. Without a doubt some of the best I've heard on these boards. That ending was particularly awesome.

Yeah, me too, depending on which set of my monitors I'm listening to....:D
But I always try to compare to commercial recordings, in this case I was using "Overcome" by Creed (not that I'm gonna get that quality by any means, but I try to come close...;)). Any way I'm gonna try a little HP and see how that sounds.

Man Joey I really like this song a lot! I can't comment on the mix now but on the computer speaks it sounds OK. I'll take a listen to it on my monitors latter and come back. Again, awesome song.

Glad you like it, Ed! :)
I'm working on another mix right now.
