I have the Alesis HD24 hard drive recorder. The other day while recording, I recorded up until the hard drive was full. In the process of swapping the drive I pulled it out without dismounting it. Long story short, when I put the drive back in, it cannot read the drive. While it mounts the drive, I can see the indicator go from 0 to 99% and then it hangs there for a moment and eventually goes to 100% but after that I get an error and it asks if I want to format the drive.

Is there a way to recover that data or is it permanently inaccesible?

Do you have the Fireport? If so, can you transfer the files to your PC?

Thanks for sharing your situation; it will remind me evermore to dismount the drive before removing it from my HD24.

Thanks! I will give that a try! I will need this device anyway because it seems like it takes FOREVER to download 24 tracks!

Ive pulled the drive out many times before which was always followed by that nasty message that says, "Don't do that again or we will make sure you suffer!" without any real repercussions. But the one time that I really didn't want to lose the data was the one time that it would not let me back in.

Maybe you needed this to understand the message you've already gotten?

The truth of the matter is that I am very anal when it comes to dismounting the drive. Its just that in times when I didnt, it was purely an accident. Like if I pulled out Drive 1 thinking that I was working on drive #2. Or if I dismounted the drive and then a temporary power drop occured causing the HD24 to reboot and then automatically reboot the drive.. And being that I have 22 drives in my library I tend to make mistakes with all of the swapping.

Download Marc Brevoort's tools. You may not need the Fireport with his software if you have a way to connect the drive directly to the PC already (a dock of some sort, or an open IDE chain).

His tools totally saved my ass last night. Recorded a DVD shoot with 7 bands for an upcoming release onto a brand new hard drive and my Fireport refused to see the drive or even have anything to do with it when I got home. Nothing worked to read it except Marc's tools.

Long story short - I got my files; client will be happy and I've got day 2 of the shoot coming up tonight and I feel a whole lot better about it!

No HD24 owner should be without this program.
