I want to record my elementary school class (singing), by dividing them into four groups and recording each group simultaneously. What do I need in terms of mics? I have a limited budget. I was looking at an AKG condenser mic that is $69 on eBay and $99 on Amazon. Would this do the trick? I guess I will be needing 4. Does anybody do multiple purchase deals?

I don't need anything fancy.

Thanks in advance.

If you want to use one Mic for each group I would look at getting a few Omni-directional Condenser mics ....

Omni mics aren"t directional and have no proximity effect so they are good for recording groups of poeple were a Uni-Directional (Cardoid) mic will pic up who the mic is pointed at so aren"t great for recording groups of poeple....

I can"t really recomend one make/model over the other as most of my omni mics are home built but there are a lot of Omni condensers out there that are affordable...just look at the "Polar Patern" spec of a Mic to find out if it is Omni or Cardoid ....

Cheers

PS: Just in case you didn"t know , you will need a "Phantom Power" of your Preamp to use a Condenser mic , most modern Preamp and Mixers have this feature....

Look up Naiant microphones. They are all omni and they can be ridiculously cheap. I have the X-M pair which are slightly pricey (still relatively cheap compared to other brands) but I use them all the time as drum overheads and on acoustic guitar.

The whole product line is highly regarded on these forums.

An excellent option is the Electro-Voice EV 635a dynamic omni. Used on many classical orchestral recordings during the 60's/70's. Run about $100 new/$80 used when I last checked a while back. A mainstay of musical TV programs also during this period.

BTW you can check out old youtube videos (like Glen Campbell's TV show) and you may be pleasantly surprised.
