Recordings with my Fostex Fd-4

Okay, I may have to amend my first post a bit. I actually listened.

Guys, don't waste your breath. That HAS to be a joke. I literally laughed.

If it's NOT a joke, then I'm not apologizing because you're obviously an asshole.

If it IS a joke, it was funny.

I personally cannot BELIEVE the restraint that sammy showed; it was impressive.

But the post is a joke.

well... sonically it didn't totally blow. You know... there was decent seperation in the mix and what not...

but it still sounds like ass. :p I'd have to echo everything else. Tune the acoustic. Maybe double it up so that it fills the mix better. And work on some more fluid strumming. Get a little better on the drums so that you can get a solid rhythm section going (i.e drums/bass). Sing it a little stronger, and bring the vocals up more once you do get a better take. I can honestly say that "performance" was the primary element that was lacking in this recording.

on a side note, you'll have to understand... there are people around here (myself not included) who post songs that sound pretty darn close to radio quality, or who have musical talent that smokes most of the artist/bands that are on the radio.... and for you to come in here with a very amateur recording (that needs a butt-load of work) and call one of the most active members of this BBS a "troll", just because he didn't drool over how great you think your tune is... well... that's kind of a dumb thing to do... (just a tip for future reference.. :D)

But don't get discouraged... there are plenty of other people around here who got off to a much more rocky start than you have with this thread... Just check your ego at the door, come on in, and learn some stuff. If you do that... I guarantee you that in 6 months, you'll be putting out recordings that put this one to shame.

i did thought this was a home recording message board...and not a studio recording...want can id do...i have a four track for gods sake

and no the tune was not a joke...you can bash my song writing all you want...but i know it is all subjective anyway

i guess you folks want technique over heart

Okay, NOW I'll apologize. Sometimes people who are familiar with the board will make up a new user name and post a sloppy song JUST to get the kinds of reactions you got. The reason *I* thought it was a joke is because I had a hard time believing that anybody with enough sense to hit a "record" button would call B.SABBATH a troll since he has THOUSANDS of posts in this forum, which you can tell by merely looking towards his avatar.

And stuff like that pisses me off, so I apologize. If it's a sincere effort, then I hope you DO stick around here. I've learned a boatload of useful information in the past few months, and you can too...if you want to learn.

For constructive help on this one, re-read B.SABBATH's first post. He pretty much nailed it...although I'd add that the brass on the kit was WAAAYYY too loud. He also said the tune was decent, which is normally the hardest part.

So keep the heart, lose the attitude, "JESUS H. CHRIST!!"

:D

well...i wanted to say sorry for calling B.SABBATH a troll too

its just...you know...your songs are your babies...sometimes...

and plus i recorded stuff just on the PC before with a mic that probably is not worth ten bucks...and believe it or not...the song posted here sounds 100 times better...so i was feeling good about if for a while

and not to make exuses for myself...but i have not played my drums on a regular basis for the past seven years

With the FD-4 and a Shure SM57, you've got the basic tools to get some really good guitar and voice recordings. Check out Erland's older stuff on this board. He uses a similar set-up. I'm an FD-8 user and have had some great results with just an SM57. Check out the other forums on this site to learn how to use the tools you have to the best of your ability.

Well Bob – that is definitely a step in the right direction. Keep reading & reading around here. I’ve been here only a couple weeks and already have learned more than I can readily assimilate. I agree with WATYF that if you keep your eyes and ears open and lose the ego, you will be producing better sounding recordings in a short time. I’m about put that to the test and see what my 2 weeks here has done for me :D

If you are any type of musician or songwriter, you had better get used to getting negative feedback. It is the feedback that you will most often get from people other than friends or family (I know from experience) and it is also the kind of feedback that helps you grow. If you take it the right way, you will improve. As you improve the feedback starts to shift from the negative to the positive over time (again from experience).

Anyway, after a rocky start, welcome aboard.

thanks..and sorry again

can i make more excuses...or should i just try harder next time?

like for instance...i only have headphones...no studio monitors..and what i heard coming from the fostex through the headphones was a little different than the final product

i am also almost deaf in one ear...

i am just a drummer who always wanted to play guitar and sing but never could..and now i am trying to everything because i have four kids and almost no time to form a band

more excuses to follow when i think of them :)

i really do want more suggestions on what i can do with my equipment to make it better...and please...no jokes about viagra

i will try and check out the other stuff that someone mention that has the same setup as me

Nope... sorry...

I already have a monopoly on "excuses".

:D

Seriously though... don't sweat it... Just do your best and be willing to take the critiques with the right attitude. Things will get better. Like I said, though.. your sound isn't all that "bad" (considering your equipment) but what you really need to do is tighten up your performances.

and hey,... if you ever wanna feel better about your recordings....... just go listen to Gidge's stuff..

:D :D :D :D

(sorry.. couldn't help myself) :p

a couple of more excuses than i am done :D

this was a spur of the moment deal

although i had a mic for a while..i just bought a stand that day...and i wanted to see how it pick up the acoustic..

i was not going to record with my acoustic until i got it fixed...but..you know things changed...

almost everything, including the guitar , drums, vocals and bass was the first take

and i only had to do the little keyboard thing in the background again because i forgot to hit record when i played it the first time

well...i am off to look into vocal and guitar lessons

bobavader,

welcome to the clinic. what progress you've made already! you've got the excuses part down very well (except you made no mention of a head cold), now just toss in a little self-deprecation, buy a bunch of studio projects gear, put together your own computer, bitch about everyone's drum tracks, and you're a real member of the club!

now please post a picture of yourself so we can all put face to that goofy name.

your friend,
erichenryus.

I remember the very first song I posted. Lord I'm trying to forget, but I just can't. :D At the time I posted it,I didn't see the substantial failings in it (yes board members it was worse than the crap I put out now).

But I went back about a month later and listened to it. All the imperfections just jumped out at me. So my one recommendation to you would be to not listen to this song for a significant period of time. Then go back and give it a spin. I think things like timing issues, out of tune guits, pitchiness in the vocals will stand out.

Then you pick yourself up and do it again. And it will be better next time.

Trip...
