Recording with Indigo io?

I just got an Indigo io. Installation was easy enough, and it sounds really good -very pleased so far.

Now, how do I use it to record? I've got a cheap dynamic mic and an average condensor mic (that I've always used with community/other people's PAs for acousitc guitar/vocals). I know that the condensor mic uses power from the board and it wouldn't work directly with the Indigo.

I downloaded Audacity (b/c of recommendations here and it looks pretty good), and plugged my cheap dynamic mic into a 1/4 to 1/8 jack converter and into the 'in' socket on the Indigo.

I pulled up the Echo Console and I could see the 'audio in' bars going up and down (a little) when I talked into the mic. But I couldn't hear anything through the headphones that were plugged into the 'out' socket on the Indigo.

Then I pulled up Audacity and hit the 'record' button. But, the 'line' on the recording 'track' barely moved, and I'm not even sure if I was causing the movement. I played it back, nothing...

I'm probably missing something very obvious, but I am new to all this... Any help would be much appreciated.

Every microphone needs a pre-amp to bring it up to line-level. That's why you got the low levels.

Just plugging them into a soundcard won't work.
