hi......

is there a way to record the output of a vst instrument while listening to something else?

fer instance.... i'd like to open a vst instrument in fruityloops, and record it's output into cooledit, while listening to a bassline in cooledit. (but i only want to record the isolated vsti output). i'm using a usb midi keyboard. it has a standard midi cable jack too.

anybody know what i'm talking about?

thanks

Depends on your sound card and options - I think the only way I could (and do) do it would be to play the Fruity track and physically connect the output you're using for that to the input you're recording to in Cool Edit.

E.g. On my Delta 44 - 4 ins and 4 outs but no digital options:

Outputs 1/2 - Vegas (Cool Edit for you) main buss output
Output 3 and/or 4 - Tracktion (FL for you) VST instrument output

Connect Out 3 (or both if it's a stereo instrument) to whichever input(s) you want to use, and press play in FL and record in CE.

Does that help at all?

thanks for responding, but that's not quite what i meant......

i want to record the vst instrument *on the fly* in cooledit. i'd be playing FROM fruityloops, but recording TO cooledit, live.

it's a usb keyboard, but there's also a standard midi jack.... if i set the record source to that midi jack, would it record the vsti output, or just the midi strokes?

Cool Edit / Audition doesn't do VSTis. You have to take the audio once it's been created in FL.

If you set your sound card to wave record in the options menu. Open up fruityloops and cool edit, set cool edit to record then minimise, open up fruity loops and press play and you may get lucky and record your VST without a glitch.

thanks tangerine, but that's not what i want to do. i found a solution using audition as a rewire host. no plugs or soundcard manipulation required.

Ah ... ok ... I know nothing about Rewire except that I haven't used it! :D
