Recording Vocals with the SM-58

Do I really need to go out a buy a quality vocal mic to record vocals at home? What can I expect with the SM-58?

It all really depends what you're trying to do. I use 58's for vocals all the time....when it comes to stuff like punk and metal, and It works great for stuff like that. But if you're doing something a little more commercial oriented, I'd probably be looking into a condenser mic.

If you do get a 58, you've got yourself a pretty versatile mic though. It can be used on guitar amps, drums, all with good results

I've got a few nice large diaphram condensors and 57's & 58's and as Link pointed out, sometimes the 58 is the weapon of choice, depending on the song/ vocalist. Agressive vocal styles sometimes bennifit from a 57 or a 58, sometimes not. Less agressive styles usually want more detail and that's where the condensors really shine.

I love my 58!! Lately I've been tracking vocals with my Rode and a 58, just for some more punch. Close on the 58 with the Rode about 18 in. back. YMMV. Good results with my own voice anyway...

singer, there is an interesting article about enhancing the sound of
sm58 type mikes at the Sound On Sound magazine website.
The website is www.sospubs.co.uk
Use the search icon and enter "microphone makeover" in the search
field and you should find it. It expands the usefulness of those mikes.

It's worth it, however, to get a large diaphram condenser for greater
vocal detail-especially on ballads.
