Hi there

Complete noob here. I would like to record my trombone playing. Unfortunately I don't get very good results with my ZoomH2. So what are my possibilities?

I don't want to go fancy about this. Mic - Interface - PC should do it. Any suggestions?

Would it eventually be possible to use the Zoom as Interface?
I also have a Sennheiser e608 Clip-on Mic. Would that work as mic? Would it need a special interface or am I better on with a "real" mic?

Bonus questions: Is there a possibility of recording to an Android Tablet instead of PC?
If I could use the mic also for live recordings, that would be cool!

The e608 is a nice mic. What is the problem with the zoom recording? What don't you like? The Sennheiser actually works pretty well if you can get the clamp to fit your bone. They are fine on most bells, but you just need to find a little cable support - cable tie or similar, assuming you don't like gaffer tape on the lacquer.

It does need careful positioning, but that can give you a slightly mellower windy sound, or a brighter rougher sound - just needs a bit of bending around.

Thanks for your reply.

The Sennheiser fits my trombone well. I already used it on live gigs, it came already with a good working support.

The Zoom recordings sound to dry to my taste and there is always some "white noise" wich I can't remove. Is there anything I can do with that?

With the zoom I sound to much like "playing in a shoe box".

Is the Sennheiser e608 a equally good mic than the SE Z1R? I know, its comparing apples to oranges.

The e608 should give you a good sound as long as you are careful with th cable to avoid cable noise and to make sure you point the mic. half way between the bell and the body (low frequencies are radiated from the body, only the highest frequencies come out of the bell).

Otherwise a Sennheiser MD421 is a great mic. for a Sax.

Here is a recording I made from myself playing a Bach Cello Suite on Bass trombone. The playing is bad, but I think the recording quality is quite good:

I put the zoom pretty near to my bell, recording only from the front. With audacity I made of my mono track 3 different tracks, one middle, one left and one right. The one in the middle being the loudest. And I added some reverb.

What do you think. Is this a good recording technique with the Zoom? What are your experiences? What should be improved in this recording and how could I achieve it?

Would I achieve a much better quality with the Sennheiser e608 and a good audio interface (e.g. the Scarlett 2i2)?
