Recording to an external hard drive

so does anybody here have experience with recording to an external hard drive. you see, i'm kinda stuck. my PC only has room for one hard drive. my ideal situation would be to have programs on one drive and saved work on the other. please help.

They work just dandy for me.

I use a USB2.0 drive with my laptop and get 96 tracks at 24/41 before a dropout.

I use a Glyph GT050 80Gb firewire drive with my laptop. It's very very fast and DEAD silent (and rackmountable).

Zero problems.
