Right now I'm using Cool Edit (from 2003). It's ok, crashes too much. I'm at the point where I'm upgrading my home recording studio and wanting to get some better recording software. I already got the computer (24" monitor too). Recommendations?

Download buch of demos, and go from there :)

I really have no experience with recording software. I got a copy of cool edit from a friend to look at, but it crashes.

well theres no other way to do it ,but hands on experience. You have to find out what program you like.

I started with cakewalk home studio, then went to protools, and now i'm a cubase user. But all the programs basicaly do the same things, the difference between them is that they all feel different.Although in the big picture they do the same thing, but getting there takes different routs on every one of them.

So if i tell you Cubase does it best,i say cubase does it differently ,it does it to my likes, and i feel comfortable with it.Although i can comeback here tomorow and tell you it sucks!!! :D because of something that sonar has and cubase doesnt  but i wont :D

I use both Adobe Audition 1.5, and Sonar 5. Both work well, but have some differences. I mainly use Sonar for Softsynths, but have recently started mixing in it also. Both are good programs.

That's what I'm looking to do, find a place to start. Cool edit just crashes on me, so I can't use what I have.

Hi. If you search the forums here you'll find all you need to know! As a matter of fact, here's the link to another recent thread which covers your question:

Here's another great link to find freeware/shareware apps and plugins:
KVR Audio Search Page

I have used Kristal and Audacity quite a bit, and they are very good ...especially for the price; FREE! ;)

I did a search, but nothing where someone asked for recording software recommendations. AND looking at his thread, he is a newbie to recording, I'm not.

I'm not looking for freeware.

Then i would suggest either cubase or sonar, these are the most popular softwares out there :D although they both far from perfect. But they both have MIDI and AUDIO compatibility.Thats just my opinion.

Have fun in your quest.

You can download trial versions of both Sonar and Cubase.. Start there and see where it takes you.

I agree with Garik and the others. All the programs are similar with different ways to get there. It really comes down to which one you feel is the best. :)

Hmmmmmm.....

Ummmmm ....I never said you were a newbie to recording or anything of the sort. I was just trying to offer you some viable free programs to try help you figure out the features that you may like to have included in whatever package you decide to go with, because most software cannot be returned once its packaging has been opened ...and since the program you "got from your friend to look at" does nothing but crash, it doesn't really help you figure out what feature set you'd like to have in your audio recording and/or editing package. You did not state that you're not looking for freeware, so why is that even an issue? I personally have invested a ton of money toward recording/editing applications, but I still use all the free VST plugins I can get my hands on which work well.

Good luck finding whatever it is you're looking for. I hope you'll be more open to other people's advice and suggestions than you were mine.

Peace.

Really, take advantage of the demos. It sounds like you've already run into some hardware/software compatibility issues, and trying out the demos should help you find the SW that works for both you and your computer.
The program I use and love is Samplitude, which has a demo and also a rental program. I own Samplitude Professional, but your needs may be met by the less expensive classic version. Check it out......

I never said you said I was a newbie -lol. I've looked at some of the free programs, nothing special. My cool edit has more, so I use it. BTW, I know what makes cool edit crash. Since there are no updates for it, I can't get a patch.

I'm looking for recommendations of the higher end packages.

Who has demos? I've been to many of the sites that people have given me recommendations for here, but I haven't seen any demos. Did I miss something?

I see Samplitude also just started doing a 90 day rental, that would be a great way to try a program without demo limitations. But try the Demo first.

I'll leave it to the Sonar, Cubase, etc. users to point you there.

I see this board doesn't have a Pro Tools forum. Why is that?

I think it's because ProTools was too expensive then the forum was made, and not many "Home recording studios" had it, now that they have the M-powered PT that will probably change, Right now I use Sonar 4, Vegas 4+DVD and Acid 4 (Acid 6 should be cool), but will get MPT soon, not that it's any better but because of it's name recognition. It's got a couple of things that might be cool but I'll still do most of my Audio stuff in Sonar, without the limitations of MPT.

Sonar4 Demo don't think they have a demo for 5 yet:

What's different about PTM and PT LE? I was looking at the digi 002 rack.
